DA: State troopers acted in self defense in Jefferson County shooting

JEFFERSON COUNTY (WKOW) -- Jefferson County District Attorney Monica J. Hall announced Tuesday there will be no criminal charges in relation to the incident resulting in the death of 23-year-old, Joseph R. Crawford-Lama.
DA Hall said because of the Wisconsin law that "allows all persons, including police officers, to use deadly force in an act of self-defense or defense of others if the person reasonably believed that he or another person face an unlawful interference that created a risk of death or great bodily harm", the three State Troopers are not being charged with any criminal charges.
The incident occurred on Dec. 9, 2020 at the intersection of WI Hwy 26 and US 12, in Fort Atkinson. The troopers involved have been on administrative leave during the investigation.

Man involved in shootout is bank robbery suspect

The person involved in a shootout with Wisconsin State Patrol officers last week in Fort Atkinson was believed to have been a suspect in a bank robbery that occurred in Monona earlier that day.
The driver, Joseph R. Crawford, 23, died of multiple gunshot wounds after State Patrol troopers attempted to stop two suspects in a vehicle in Johnson Creek on Dec. 9 that led to a chase and gunfire, according to the Department of Justice, which is handling the investigation along with the Division of Criminal Investigation.
The DOJ said the troopers were not aware of the bank robbery investigation when they attempted the traffic stop. The investigation of the bank robbery is being led by the Monona Police Department and the FBI.
