Major political parties have unleashed their top guns in Matungu and Kabuchai constituencies as campaigns for the by-elections enter the homestretch.
Top party officials and MPs from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Ford Kenya, Amani National Congress (ANC) and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have pitched tent in the two constituencies to drum up support for their candidates ahead of the Thursday polls.
Matungu and Kabuchai seats fell vacant following the deaths of MPs Justus Murunga in November and James Mukwe Lusweti in December.

Mother vs son: Late Matungu MP Justus Murunga's family to face off in election

The widow of the late Matungu MP Justus Murunga will battle it out with her step son in the forthcoming by-election. Christabel Murunga and Eugene Ambwere declared their interest in the seat at the burial of the MP on December 5 last year. Ambwere is the eldest son of the late Murunga. The two who will vie as independent candidates will battle it out with 13 other aspirants in the March 4 by-election.
Mother and son will fight to win the support of 65,000 registered voters in Matungu. Ambwere tried in vain to get the endorsement of Deputy President William Ruto during the burial of his father. Mrs Murunga said she has what it takes to complete the work started by her late husband. Ambwere, a Nairobi based businessman has been crisscrossing the constituency to endear himself to the voters.

A screenshot shared on Facebook claims Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga asked voters in Matungu constituency in Kakamega county, western Kenya, “to vote for David Were in the upcoming by-election”.
The screenshot looks like a tweet from NTV Kenya, a private TV station in Kenya. It was posted in a Facebook group with over 134,000 members on 31 December 2020.
The tweet appears to quote Odinga as saying: “I urge residents of Matungu to vote for David Were in the upcoming by-election scheduled for March 4 2021. We want to ensure ODM fields LUOs to fill vacant electoral positions to enable us have greater bargaining power in the National Government come 2022. Luos must be represented across the country.”

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has handed over a direct ticket to former MP, David Were as its flag bearer for the Matungu constituency by-election.
However, ODM’s decision to hand a direct ticket to David Were has sparked protests from with rivals who have vowed not to support him in the March 4 mini-poll.
According to ODM secretary general, Edwin Sifuna, Were was a strong candidate who had an upper hand to clinche the sit.
Were will now face ANC candidate Peter Nabulindo and about 10 independent candidates, including Benard Wakoli who decamped from Ford Kenya after the party leadership withdrew from the race in support of the ANC candidate

"I want to tell the people of Matungu that I'm coming back to complete the work that I had started, and also to complete Murunga's work," said Were.
