COLUMBIA BASIN – With the Mat Classic just about a month away, Basin squads continue to battle down the stretch of the 2023-24 wrestling season. Read along to see how local teams fared at last weekend’s tournaments across the Pacific Northwest.
EPHRATA – After defeating Quincy earlier last week, the Ephrata Tigers fell 48-30 in a home dual against Ellensburg Thursday night, Ephrata’s first Central Washington Athletic Conference match of the year. “Ellensburg just brought a little more intensity tonight than we did,” Ephrata boys wrestling coach Joe Knox said. “They really came to wrestle. Maybe we weren’t as ready as we should have been, and at the end of the day that’s my responsibility.” ...
ROYAL CITY – Looking to build off of last year’s third-place finish at the Girls 1B/2B/1A/2A Mat Classic, the Royal Knights enter this season with a bigger roster of 28 wrestlers, growing from last year’s team of 16 athletes.
EPHRATA – The Tigers enter this winter with 55 wrestlers on the mats this season, led by first-year Head Coach Joe Knox. Knox was a former assistant coach for the Tigers from 1995-2006 before serving as an assistant coach at Columbia Middle School from 2011-2023.
