Announcements rite now. i don t see how the government of france can make an announcement prematurely without even analyzing wreckage, even as far as terrorism goes. you have to do explosive testing on that material. and we re at the very initial stages of the investigation, i don t see how they can do that. they have also come as far as to say that they don t believe that there was any kind of a midair explosion, based on the way that we see that wreckage on our screen right now. do you buy that as well? i don t buy that, it might not have been a rapid decompression, which is a tremendous loss of pressure, it could have been gradual. and it s just it s too premature to tell at this point. but i think that should remain on the table. all right, what about the fact that there was any kind of foul play? maybe including the pilots, but you lose the fact that somebody may have been in the cockpit as well. how will we ever find that out? that will be on the voice ....

Completely destroy an airplane. this auto could be something a very simple thing such as improvised small explosive, small arms fire that pierced part of the airplane or caused an electrical fire of some sort. it doesn t have to be a rapid decompression. it could have been something minor that caused a significant problem with the airplane. chris, do you think that the passengers could tell the dissent? that 8,000 8 minutes and about 32,000 feet. do you think they could tell that the plane was going down? did it seem catastrophically going down or was there relatively smooth dissent? well, if it was a relatively mouth dissent: you don t know what kind of chaos if any was going on on that plane in the midst of the dissent it could have been complete chaos as to which they would have been overwhelmed by what was happening. or as the opposite is still possible. that it was a gradual enough dissent that there was no ....

Director of safety for the coalition of airline pilot associations. miles, let me start with you. you saw tom s demonstration there. does this fit into any of those theories? this sort of falls somewhere in the middle there. it was this gradual ten-minute decline but fairly consistent decline. yeah. it s kind of an outlier based on what we just heard. in the first two cases that he spoke of swiss air and air alaska the crews had long communications with air traffic control talking about their problems troubleshooting. in both cases, the ultimate investigation was that they spent a little too much time troubleshooting, both of them should have gotten on the ground faster. in any case there was a lot of communication. in the case of helios there was subtle decompression. the crew became incapacitated and it flew its flight on auto pilot pretty much as they had programmed it in. there were fighter jets which came beside it and they were able to determine that was the cause. the crew was ....

38,000 feet that took eight minutes. but no distress call was made. what does that all tell you? very little rosemary. i really have difficulties with some of the speculation i m hearing [ inaudible ] they do believe that something catastrophic appeared on the flight deck and the aircraft started a descent. it clearly started a descent. that was obvious from the atc radar. whether the pilots initiated that voluntarily or involuntarily is a big question in my mind. if something catastrophic occurred where a panel you blew out some part of the aircraft and they had decompression, the first thing to do is get down to 10,000 feet or thereabouts. it does look like a controlled descent initially. but if it was a controlled descent, why didn t they say something? i think that point has been made before. we should advise air traffic control not only to let them ....

Malfunction to a major malfunction will trigger an alarm. and once investigators actually listen to the cockpit voice recorder they will be able to tell pretty well what the specific alarm was. all right. if an a 320 decompresses or any plane decompresses, i take it then people lose consciousness at that point unless you put on an oxygen mask. does that necessarily mean though that when your auto pilot still be intact and when the plane continued to fly until it ran out of fuel unless there was some other structural problem? well greta, there are different types of decompression. they can happen all of a sudden or slowly. the oxygen masks are readily available to the pilots. once again, until we actually know how the aircraft was being controlled at the final moments, i think it s a little too early to speculate as to what the pilots were doing right before the accident. i m not talking about these pilots, but just in ....
