Scientists say 'forgotten' coffee with superior flavour is climate change-proof

A forgotten African species of coffee that grows at higher temperatures could save the coffee industry, scientists believe.
Coffea stenophylla from Sierra Leone can tolerate higher temperatures than Arabica, the world s most popular coffee, according to climate change experts.
But the species also has a superior flavour, with notes of peach, blackcurrant, mandarin, chocolate, caramel and elderflower syrup.
According to professional tasters from Nespresso & Jacobs Douwe Egbert (JDE), its flavour is a bit like high-end Arabica .
C. stenophylla, also known as the highland coffee of Sierra Leone , is a rare and threatened species that was rediscovered in the wild in the West African country back in 2018.  ....

A once-prized coffee species, rediscovered in West Africa decades after it was thought to have disappeared, is just as tasty as high-end Arabica and more resilient to climate change, scientists said Monday, adding that the forgotten bean could help future-proof quality coffee.
While there are more than a hundred known coffee species, the world gets its caffeine hit mostly from the beans of just two Arabica, considered to be the superior brew, and the less refined Robusta, mostly used for instant mixes. ....

Scientists and Industry Convene for a Remarkable Tasting of Three Wild Coffee Species

Coffea stenophylla, which has black cherries, is a species that has almost completely died out. CIRAD press photo by C. Cornu, CIRAD.
Nearly one month ago, as the world looked forward to the end of a mercilessly long year, a group of scientists and coffee experts gathered in the south of France with an eye on coffee’s future for decades or centuries to come.
The cause for the convention was a first-of-its-kind coffee tasting of three coffee species that, unlike
arabica or
Coffea stenophylla,
Coffea congensis.
Held in Montpellier and at virtual offices across Europe, the tasting was led by the French agricultural research organization CIRAD. The goal was to examine the gustatory properties of each of the coffee species following lab-controlled roasting in order to determine if they might one day prove to be viable genetic companions to existing coffee species and cultivars. ....

Leading European coffee noses met on 10 December, in the CIRAD sensorial analysis laboratory in Montpellier and virtually (in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium), for a world-first tasting of three coffee species from the
Coffea biological resource centre (BRC). The species concerned are not used by the coffee industry, which currently grows just three:
Coffea arabica (Arabica),
Coffea canephora (Robusta) and
Coffea liberica (just 0.1% of the market). The advantage of using these new species lies in their capacity to resist a warmer climate and coffee leaf rust. But do they come up to scratch in terms of taste? It was up to the expert jury to find out. ....
