Ezard wins fourth term as Jacksonville mayor

Ezard wins fourth term as Jacksonville mayor
Jacksonville Mayor Andy Ezard will return to his office for a fourth term following his victory Tuesday night in the city's mayoral election.
Ezard received 81% or 1,601 votes, with all 18 city precincts reporting Tuesday night. The Jacksonville native defeated business owner Nicole Riley, who received about 19% or 366 votes. Ezard has served as mayor since 2009.
In other contested area races:
Sangamon County
Buffalo: Incumbent village trustees Doug Badgley and David Bueltmann won reelection Badgley receiving 26% of the vote (54 votes) and Bueltmann receiving 24% percent of the vote (50 votes).
The final spot on the board remains up for grabs, with Citizens' Party candidate Thomas Paige and independent Jennifer Dennison each separated by one vote. Paige has received 13.40 percent of the vote (28 votes), while Dennison has received 12.92% of the vote (27 votes).

Jacksonville election: Mayor Andy Ezard faces opponent, Nicole RIley

Property tax and transparency issues have motivated a Jacksonville business owner to challenge Mayor Andy Ezard, providing the incumbent with his first challenge since his inaugural mayoral run in 2009.
Nicole Riley, owner of Soap Co. Coffee Shop and Freya & Co. Salon in Jacksonville, will oppose Ezard in Tuesday's municipal elections. Ezard, a lifelong resident of the city, has served as mayor since 2009 and has run unopposed in each of the last two mayoral races in 2013 and 2017. He received 86% of the vote — 784 votes — in the Feb. 23 primary, while Riley took 12% — 112 votes.
Ezard wants people to know that his experience — which includes four years serving as the city clerk prior to being elected as mayor — is being used to work hard for the people, even in unpredictable times like right now, with COVID-19 affecting all facets of life throughout the city.

Update: Over 100 Manchester Jail Inmates Test Positive for COVID-19

5:00
Listen to NHPR reporter Sarah Gibson speak with All Things Considered Host Peter Biello about the status of the outbreak on January 7.
Under oath at a bail hearing Tuesday, Jail Superintendent Willie Scurry testified that until Dec. 23, inmates were not allowed to wear masks in common spaces because of “security concerns.” Scurry added that the jail relied on self-monitoring by staff and did not have an active COVID-19 screening process for anyone entering the jail, though it was in the process of developing one.
The state health department said Tuesday it has taken over management of the Valley Street outbreak and is in regular contact with medical staff there.

A judge is considering whether an inmate at Valley Street Jail who has COVID-19 should be released on bail, in light of concerns about the facility’s management of health and safety during the pandemic.
On Wednesday, Hillsborough County Superior Court Judge Charles Temple heard over three hours of arguments and testimony on the Manchester jail’s COVID-19 protocols. Attorney Elliot Friedman argued those protocols endanger the health and life of his client, William Jones.

22 staff at Valley Street jail have COVID-19, jail head says

Twenty-two staff at the Valley Street jail currently have COVID-19, Jail Superintendent Willie Scurry said on Wednesday, the same day that the jail began testing inmates after reports of a high number of possible cases.
On the defensive, Scurry took part in two public forums at which he addressed issues of COVID-19 and testing at the jail, which until this week had tested only 11 inmates.
Scurry told Hillsborough County commissioners that testing in Unit 2D would take place on Wednesday, though he said it was unrelated to a Union Leader report about sick inmates in the jail.
Fourteen or 15 inmates are in quarantine in Unit 2D with COVID-19 symptoms but had not been tested, the jail’s head nurse testified.
