Eliminating racial inequity demands empathy and compassion, but also social justice.
The newest center within the T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion at UC San Diego will have that focus, created to identify, understand and resolve social justice issues in health care that primarily affect racial and ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ and under-privileged communities.
“Across this country and throughout society, we face extraordinary challenges regarding racial injustice, especially those impacting marginalized members of our communities,” said Gentry Patrick, PhD, a professor of neurobiology in the Division of Biological Sciences and the newly named director of the Center for Empathy and Social Justice in Human Heal ....

Athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics are likely to face highly partisan crowds with overseas spectators barred from attending – but top performers won’t let it change their game, says Macquarie University researcher Dr Kath Bicknell.
Japan’s ban on international spectators attending the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games could change the whole vibe of the Games.
Olympic uncertainty: COVID-19 is putting the postponed Tokyo Games at risk once again, but if they do go ahead, athletes will deal with more stressors than usual.
“There are definitely some athletes who really feed off the crowd, and they are going to need to find different strategies to stay motivated and on-task and rise to the occasion,” says Dr Kath Bicknell, whose research in the Department of Cognitive Science looks at embodied cognition in athletes and other top performers. ....

IIT-Kanpur to set-up new Department of Cognitive Science
The new department will study the working of the human mind and mechanisms in the brain involved in mental processes and interface. It will also develop new artificially intelligent and machine-learning interfaces, said IIT-Kanpur director.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will soon launch a new Department of Cognitive Science. IIT-Kanpur claims to be the first among the IITs to explore transdisciplinary scientific research of the human mind and brain. Areas of research that the new department will focus on include consciousness studies, perception and action, decision-making and reasoning, language processing, social cognition, applied cognitive sciences (HMI/HCI, Education, Mental health), and robotics. ....
