LONGVIEW — The last defendant in the case of Cowlitz County Sheriff Deputy Justin DeRosier’s 2019 murder was sentenced last week, while another recently sentenced defendant in the case has not yet reported to jail.
Troy Brynelson Originally published on July 24, 2021 1:59 pm Jeremy Brown, a 13-year deputy at the Clark County Sheriff’s Office who was most recently a detective on a regional drug task force, is the deputy shot and killed Friday night, OPB has learned. Brown joined the Clark County Sheriff’s Office in August 2007. He had stints working with the Washington Department of Corrections and the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office in Montana, as well. Brown served in the United States Marine Corps from 1993 to 1995. For the last four years, Brown served as a detective on a drug task force with sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Vancouver Police Department. He was one of three deputies who fatally shot Kevin Peterson Jr. last October when a drug sting went awry.

State correctional officers David Christensen and Berisford Morse, Yakima Corrections Officer Daniel Oaks, Bainbridge Island Police Officer Kurt Enget and Grant County Deputy Dan Melvin all died from complications of COVID-19.
Restrictions forced by the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays and exacerbated court backlogs this year, but defendants in several major 2019 cases were sentenced. The pandemic public health measures caused a huge backlog in criminal and civil cases in district and superior courts. In March, the court system suspended trials but criminal hearings continued with new safety precautions. More than two months later, Superior Court began holding live-streamed virtual court. Over the summer, staff transformed portions of the Cowlitz County Event Center into courtrooms large enough to hold socially-distanced jury trials. The first criminal trial held since March was held Sept. 23. Everyone wore face masks, jurors sat six feet apart and plexiglass surrounded the witness stand and separated the prosecution and defense.
