Machine learning helped predict women at high risk of developing gestational diabetes, revealed a new study published in the Endocrine Society s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Machine learning is a form of artificial intelligence.
Gestational diabetes is a common complication during pregnancy that affects up to 15 percent of pregnant women. High blood sugar in the mother can be dangerous for the baby and lead to complications like stillbirth and premature delivery. Most women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes during the second trimester, but some women are at high risk and could benefit from earlier intervention. ....

SAN FRANCISCO, CA December 10, 2020 One of biologists most vexing tasks is figuring out how proteins, the molecules that carry the brunt of a cell s work, do their job. Each protein has a variety of knobs, folds, and clefts on its surface that dictate what it can do. Scientists can visualize these features fairly easily on individual proteins. But proteins don t act alone, and scientists also need to know the shape and composition the structure, as they call it of the complexes that proteins form when working together. ....

Novel System to Treat Water Using Direct Solar Steam Generation

Novel System to Treat Water Using Direct Solar Steam Generation
Written by AZoCleantechDec 10 2020
Across the world, a huge number of people are currently affected due to the lack of fresh drinking water, particularly in remote rural regions, leading to considerable risk to human life and society.
Scientists have now come up with a strategy to increase the evaporation rate of water by matching the energy required for vaporization with the input energy, paving the way for improved efficiency of direct solar steam generation. Image Credit: Lei Miao from SIT.
Although methods like membrane distillation and reverse osmosis have been employed to treat saline water and mitigate the situation, they are hampered by drawbacks like high cost, low productivity and high energy consumption. ....
