American College of Surgeons launches National Surgeon Scientist Program
New funding opportunity for early-career faculty members will provide surgeons with grant support to make cancer-related basic and translational scientific research integral to their careers
CHICAGO (April 27, 2021): The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has introduced its National Surgeon Scientist Program (NSSP) to provide competitive funding opportunities for faculty members within their first one to five years of appointment and whose research focus is in a cancer-related disease and is basic or translational science research.
The program was developed to give surgeons an important assist in making scientific research integral to their careers. “There are many factors that make it difficult for a surgeon to become a scientist. The training paradigm for surgeons is intense, long, and doesn’t leave much time to pursue scientific research. Furthermore, hospital revenues are bas ....

Simple treatment during pregnancy can protect baby from memory problems in later life, study in rats suggests
A new study in laboratory rats has discovered a direct link between low oxygen in the womb and impaired memory function in the adult offspring. It also finds that anti-oxidant supplements during pregnancy may protect against this.
This study shows that we can use preventative medicine even before birth to protect long term brain health.
Dino Giussani
Low oxygen in the womb – known as chronic fetal hypoxia – is one of the most common complications in human pregnancy. It can be diagnosed when a routine ultrasound scan shows that the baby is not growing properly and is caused by a number of conditions including pre-eclampsia, infection of the placenta, gestational diabetes or maternal obesity. ....

Confirmed by research: Intellectual disability is rarely inherited – Risk for younger siblings is low
Intellectual disability is most often caused by changes to the genome that take place in early foetal development and are not found in the parents’ DNA. This is why the risk of recurrence in the next sibling of the family is very small, as indicated by a study conducted at the University of Helsinki. Furthermore, Finns do not have a higher risk of inherited developmental disorders compared to other Europeans.
The prevalence of intellectual disabilities, which means difficulties with learning and understanding new things, is roughly 1-2% in the population. People with a severe intellectual disability need help from others in daily activities throughout their lives. ....

Temporal link between medicinal cannabis for epilepsy and early puberty

Some previously published studies have linked cannabis to increased testosterone levels
The use of medical cannabis for severe childhood epilepsy may be linked to early puberty, doctors have warned in the journal BMJ Case Reports after treating a 2 year old boy with the condition.
Some previously published studies have linked cannabis use to increased levels of the male hormone testosterone, raising the question of a possible dose-related effect as higher strength preparations are readily available, the report authors point out.
Research suggests that cannabis oil may help cut the risk of seizures in childhood epilepsy. But as yet, there’s no consensus on its impact on a trio of glands, known as the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. ....

"Prevalence and risk factors of pre-schoolers' fine motor delay within " by Karel F.B. Strooband, Marc de Rosnay et al.

Abstract
Aim: This study examined the prevalence and risk factors of fine motor delay in Australian pre-school children from low-income communities. Methods: Children from the Early Start Baseline Study completed the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (3rd edn.). Age, sex, executive function and family characteristics were assessed and associations with fine motor skills analysed. Results: Data were available for 700 children (M 54.0 ± 8.6 months, 53.1% boys) of which 77.4% were typically developing, 12.1% at risk and 10.4% delayed for fine motor skill. Children had higher odds of being delayed if they were male (odds ratio (OR) 3.30, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.22–4.90) or indigenous (OR 3.31, 95% CI 2.12–5.16) and had lower self-regulatory (OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.31–3.58). Higher vocabulary (OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.89–0.94), higher family income (OR 0.22, 95% CI 0.05–0.90) and family education (OR 0.25, 95% CI 0.08–0.74) were associated with lower odds of delay. Conclusion: ....
