Covid-19 JN.1 New Cases LIVE: India reports 157 cases of COVID sub-variant JN.1, highest from Kerala and Gujarat

Covid-19 JN.1 Subvariant New Cases Live News Updates: A total of 157 cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been identified in India, with Kerala recording the highest count at 78, followed by Gujarat with 34, as per the latest data from INSACOG updated on Thursday.Over the past few weeks, several states have observed a rise in COVID-19 cases, with nine states and Union territories confirming the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant. These states include Kerala (78), Gujarat (34), Goa (18), Karnataka (eight), Maharashtra (seven), Rajasthan (five), Tamil Nadu (four), Telangana (two), and Delhi (one), as reported by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).INSACOG's data reveals that out of the 141 recorded COVID-19 cases in December, JN.1 was present, while 16 such cases were identified in November.Although the World Health Organization (WHO) categorizes JN.1 as a "variant of interest" due to its rapid spread, it states that it poses a "low" global public health risk.Initially classified as a variant of interest (VOI) under the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, a parent lineage designated as a VOI, JN.1 has recently seen a surge in reported cases worldwide. In response to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases and the detection of the JN.1 sub-variant in the country, the central government has urged states and Union territories to remain vigilant.
