the survivors of the sandy hook elementary school shooting, graduating from high school. they were just first-graders when they tragically lost 20 of their classmates in that massacre 12 years ago tonight they still feel the weight of that loss this is such a monumental guy and we all can feel what we ve lost should been all royal classmates 391. one last time. and i just can t i gave you that. i can never be that. i think we all are carrying your memory through us and making sure that they re walking stage right there with us. the school s principal reading the names of all 20 students who were murdered in that attack, also leading a moment of silence and honoring, of course, the six teachers and administrators were also killed wearing white and green ribbons on their gowns, each inscribed with forever in our hearts to remember the victims it is a tragedy that has understandably shape the course of their lives. many of the survivors now activists, some of them meeting recently with vice president kamala harris to push for gun control thanks so much for joining us tonight. america hill, ac30 60 starts now tonight, not 360 breaking news, a gun, eight clips two axis, one, weighted whip, knives handcuffs, a stun gun one suspect. all we are learning about the man arrested in new york with all this in his suv. and what authorities think he had planned for it. also tonight, what happens when the attorney general of the united states is held in contempt of congress and the effort is led by a congressman famous for defying how subpoena and later this will both fill your heart and break it. randy k. with surviving first-graders of the sandy hook massacre. now, high school graduates john berman here, infer anderson and we do begin with the breaking news and i just want to show you again what new york police officers found in the back of a ford explorer, they pulled over early this morning in the city s queens borough. it is frankly terrifying seen as john miller himself, a veteran of the nypd and fbi, joins us now, along with former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe and john just just tell us what more authorities are learning about this man and what they found in his car? while they re doing the deep die, if you ve got the nypd detective bureau, but also the nypd s intelligence bureau, which specializes in counterterrorism matters and the joint terrorism i m taskforce with the fbi all peeling back as life on one hand, what you re not finding yet and may never find is that he was radicalized, that he was in contact with an overseas terrorist group or that he had a plan to commit an act of terrorism. the concerning fees, as you have very well-framed with pictures is that he was driving around in a car equipped to do so. not only the weapons, but a collapsible button with the words carved into it in arabic god forgive me. a social media page that displays, and this isn t secret information. i went to his social media page and looked it has a flag that has been used before by al-qaeda in one of the images. so they have to figure out what s going on with him from family members, what their hearing is troubled, having problems with drugs hugs perhaps meth paranoid, and somebody who who may just be going through some mental health issues. but the danger is clear. do they just pull this guy over randomly they saw that his license plate were covered by one of those plastic things you can buy them at auto stories, it s basically meant to thwart the red light cameras in the speed cameras on the traffic violation. they looked in the car and they said they saw a knife on the seat, asked him to step out of the car so a taser and then a gun also between the front seats. and that led to the arrest for weapons charges in the search of the car. so not complete luck that they found it, but it s certainly something that could have slipped through heading on the license great example, an andy mccabe will tell you this. i m how routine police works sometimes better than the best intelligence is. what can keep your head of one of these incidents, andy, that arsenal, that this man had in the suv can bind with the qualities that john just described there, how much damage couldn t have done oh, i mean, john, there s a there s really no no limit to what this guy could have done with that sort of arsenal. and the thing that really jumps out to me is the nine magazines, nine loaded magazines to go along with the glock semi-automatic pistol. i mean, that is someone who is ready to shoot oh lot. so even if there is no connection to terrorism here, even this is, if this is a lone actor, these very heads up on the ball, police officers may have stopped a mass shooting, may have stopped some sort of a stabbing spree in a large group of people which you can find anywhere on the streets of manhattan, pretty much anytime you want. so what they may have stopped here, well, we ll maybe never know. but no question. john s absolutely right. this is the result of really solid police work. taking a look at something that s clearly illegal, doing this sort of reasonable investigation that follows from that picking up on all the signs and taking a step to really make sure that new yorkers are safe. i can tell you that my former colleagues, john s former colleagues at the joint terrorism task force. i m sure all over this right now, they re john said peeling this guy s life back. but what they re most concerned about right now, john is who this guy may have been talking to. they want to fully frame out his network of associates, people, he s corresponding with on social media. what were those conversations in those communications like to the extent that they can be recreated, they want to know if this guy has anyone else in his orbit who is similarly armed or similarly inclined andy said the clips or what, what s most concerning, what about the mta vested in the police bulletproof vest? what does that indicate? that s interesting. the two least two deadly items on the table could be the ones that tell us the most an mta vest that will get you into restricted areas in the subway believing that you re a subway worker the police bulletproof vest is not the standard best it s the heavy, vest, it s the plate carrier that is meant to stop heavier weapons and he has put an nypd patch on it so we re talking about someone who is driving in a black suv that kind of looks like an unmarked police car with this other indicia you wonder what it was for nand just finally either is a day after that sources tell cnn at eight tajik nationals with potential ties to terrorism and possible links to isis members over see is were arrested in the us. again, the ipd stress is way too early to determine if this arrested eight has any connection to terror groups but you do get the sense that authorities right now are on alert for a potential attacks john this is a beacon. it should, it should really get people s attention to the fact that even though we re not talking about stuff like this, every day, our intelligence folks are law enforcement folks, people who are focusing on the counterterrorism targets and threats they are at a very high state of alert. we know this because what the leaders have told us recently fbi director christopher wray testified recently about the increased threat awareness from the community in this country that may be inspired by or connected to hamas actor. so there is a whole broad range you very concerning threats and we re fortunate to have those folks watching those things closely and became great to see a john miller will get you back to digging, find out what you can. thanks very much. more breaking news on capitol hill late today, the republican controlled house made attorney general merrick garland, the third attorney general to be held in contempt of congress. garlin now joins obama attorney general, eric holder, and trump attorney general william barr in the history books. in this case is for refusing to turn over audio recordings of interviews that president biden did with a special counsel, who later declined to prosecute him. but vote was both politically driven and somewhat rich in that one of those pushing hardest for this house judiciary chair, jim jordan fight a subpoena to appear before the house january 6 committee with us now, from capitol hill, seen as meloni s the nose. so how did the vote breakdown today, melanie, will john this vote fell almost entirely along party lines, just one republican that s dave joyce of ohio, voted against this contempt the dilution, while all republicans voted for it. and of course, all democrats voted against it. so now it s really up to the doj to determine whether they re or actually going to prosecute attorney general merrick garland, which of course is very unlikely to happen, especially since price on and biden did assert executive privilege over those audio recordings which were of his interview with the special counsel in relation to the classified documents case. but speaker mike johnson said, regardless of what ends up happening or not happening, this was an important step for the house to take. just listen. we did our job on the contempt i think it sends an important message. we re defending article one and ariff, the wording for oversight, and we have to do that we ll see what happens next. but i the house has to do its work and i m pleased with the outcome. so again, this is a largely symbolic vote. it s much more likely to end up in federal court than it is in a prosecution, but it is a dramatic escalation in the feud between congress in the doj with merrick garland now become just the latest attorney general to be held in contempt. the congress john. so we did mention that the congressman jim jordan, defied a subpoena to a b appear before the house january 6 committee. did he ever face any consequences for that? yes. so he never complied with that subpoena to appear before the committee to talk about his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election in the house, which was run by democrats at the time, opted not to hold him in contempt of commerce. so no, jordan did not face any repercussions for his decision to defy that congressional subpoena. but speaker mike johnson was asked at a press conference earlier this morning, how can republicans hold merrick garland in contempt for oh, congress for defining a congressional subpoena when several of their own republican members have done exactly that. but johnson just responded by attacking the january 6, but committee and falsely calling it an illegitimate panel. john, we ll get to that milliner zone with thanks for being with us. appreciate it with us. now, maryland democratic congressman jamie raskin, congressman. thanks so much for being with us what s your reaction to the house vote to hold the attorney general in contempt in your mind? what helped could the audio recordings provide that the transcripts cannot well, it s a ridiculous motion in a ridiculous decision it s really the first time in american history that someone has been held in contempt by the us congress for complying with a subpoena from congress there s been overwhelming compliance in this case. what they were interested in was president biden s testimony before the special counsel the attorney general, the department justice, turned over the entire testimony verbatim, the entire transcript. they turned over all of the correspondence related did to it, and they even produce the special counsel himself, robert hur, who came over and spent several hours testifying and answering all questions about it. so they were saying they wanted to audio tape like they wanted the e-book. it wasn t enough to have the book itself. they wanted the audio book to go with it and everybody on capitol understands that they are looking for in president biden s more than five hours of testimony, which he gave during the time right after the terrorists to try cities on october 7 some verbal lapses, some mispronounced words or some ohms, or some us or something like that. and that s all for the purposes of creating a political tv attack ad. and everybody knows that that s what it s about. about and it s a ridiculous waste and abusive congressional resources and it was particularly rich as i think you said, and as i said on the house floor today, that this is coming from people who did not support contempt citations against people who really completely blew off congress and produced no documents and no testimony. people like steve bannon and some of those members who spoke on the floor on behalf of holding the attorney general united states in contempt themselves had never responded in any substantive way. to the subpoenas that were sent to them by the bipartisan january 6 select committee, which by the way, was found to be perfectly legitimate by multiple courts when our jurisdiction or authority was challenged in any way, let me play let me play what house speaker mike johnson had to say about that, specifically the idea of jim jordan who did not come comply with your subpoenas, you were on that committee. listen oh, i m so glad you brought up the january 6 committee. we ll be talking a lot more about that in the coming weeks. there s been a lot of investigation about that committee. i don t think it was properly constituted. i don t think it was it was properly administered. and now we know that apparently some of the evidence was hidden and some maybe even destroyed so you ll see, you ll hear much more about that in the days ahead. you talk about apples to oranges. there couldn t be a more clear contrast between that and what we re talking about here. do you see this is apples and oranges and respond if you d like to his charge that your committee was on lawfully constituted yeah, it s of course the exact opposite of what speaker johnson just said every federal court to look at this said that the january 6 select committee, which was a bipartisan committee with the democratic chair in a republican vice chair was completely lawfully constituted and lawfully operated and none of the people who tried to litigate against us, one in any way, they re just repeating a meeting, particularly the senate meeting? what does donald trump and the trump campaign hope to gain from it? they ve been pretty vague about the specifics of what they re hoping to talk about. it s been left sort of in broad strokes about policy the border medicare, social security. and i expect we will hear a lot about that. but i think this is mostly as one lawmaker put it to me about trump trying to garner enthusiasm the senators in particular, as you know, this is the first time he s going to be in a room with mitch mcconnell s since 2020 and the senate republicans, unlike house republicans, have been a group that have been not more resistant to him, but certainly less pliant in turn because of his demands. however, we have seen in the days since his conviction in manhattan is a pretty broad array of republicans, including senators, rallying around him and saying that this conviction tonight s improper or that democrats should be investigated or prosecutors should be prosecuted and i think this might be a different tone of meeting than we ve seen him have with senators for you know, congressman in 2017 when trump took office, the first time, there were some republican members of congress who went their own way are pushed back on some controversial statements or some policies that he had at the time are there any of them really left doo doo non trump republicans have any power and congress anymore well, one, i think this is going to be a great opportunity for president trump to be surrounded by republicans after felony convictions and show that he is still the leader of the party and is still generates a doozy asm. i think that there are some republicans who are running in biden districts, districts of president biden won in 2020, that will be concerned about being too close to president trump. and i think president trump understands that they have to win their races so while they won t push back verbally, they won t push back publicly they will certainly have some distance before they re election in november. so omega, as we said, mitt romney, lisa murkowski won t be there, i guess not for them specifically, but maybe others who haven t been fully in the trump camp. what outreach has there been from trump or the trump campaign? do they do the outreach thing they do actually do the outreach thing. they have people who worked in trump s world or close to trump s world, who do a lot of congressional relations. brian jack before he ran for congress himself, did a lot of that work. there are others who have taken over the political work there are people who work for trump directly, who have their own relationships. they do do outreach. but again, it s not always the kind of traditional political outreach we have experienced before. in the past are seen in the past. in some cases it is. i mean, one thing i will say about trump is he has been working the phones a lot himself. i mean, there are republicans who to have been shown over and over as these primaries took place, that trump is dominating and he s not going away and he is the presumptive nominee now and yes, there are some people who have races that it is more sensitive to be close to trump and they need some distance from him, but they recognize that he is potentially going to win the polling at the moment is showing him slightly ahead in a number of polls, not all of them, but in a number of them. and so there are cognizant of the fact that he is faring well and the message is clear to them that they may not want to be so at odds with the leader of their party. congressmen, as we mentioned, in addition to the congressional meetings, he s going to speak with ceos and business roundtable. i want to play you a portion of a speech he gave in new jersey and get your reaction i ll give you a trump middle-class, upper class, lower lower-class business-class, big tax cut you re going to have the biggest tax cut so big tax cuts across the board, including new business tax cuts, i guess on top of the 2017, 2018 tax cuts, is that even possible well, anything s possible it depends on who has majority of the house and who has a majority in the senate. if the republicans are in the majority of both and president trump wins reelection, then certainly something s possible. you only need a majority vote in the senate to pass a tax cut as we did the last tax cut, i m not sure what the appetite is going to be for a big tax cut. i think that he may want to play around the margins, but it ll be interesting to see if he can get a majority of republicans if there s especially if it s a small majority in either the senate or the house to go for a big tax. good. so in the senate, maggie, tomorrow you ve got jd vance tim, scott, marco rubio, and the house side, byron donalds. these are all people on the vp list, at least the ones that we know about how much auditioning do you think might be going on in public? but behind closed doors for everyone to see i don t think it s going to be that different than what we ve seen in public. john, i mean, what we ve seen in public is a number of these folks, not all of them, but a number of them show up at the manhattan courthouse where trump was on trial. we have seen them hold press conferences and denounce the charges against him. we have seen them defend him. i mean, i think there were few defenders that donald trump has on television anyway, who are as vocal as jd vance and i expect you will continue to see that. but the jockeying has been gone going on in private in public. i don t think it will be a massive change in private tomorrow. i do think you will see trump do what he often does, which is work the room talking, taking informal polls praising this one, praising that s work, not physical work. like you re doing a plant. he has a solid gold toilet at home so how can he really empathize with your life and when you say wait, joe biden walked a picket line with us. michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania, donald trump won them and the rest of course, was history. so let s come back to 2020 with that map up there and take a look. the union vote was a big part of it. let me stretch this out for you. forgive me for turning my back, but just to stretch it out so you can see a little bit bigger. hillary clinton won, but with just 53% to 40% for trump in 20169 points better joe biden gets 62% in 2020, part of his coalition that helped him win in michigan. now, look, trump only went down to 37 percent, so it s not just a groundswell of union votes for biden, hillary clinton lost a bunch of those blue color votes to third party candidates. that s one of the big questions a can president biden keep that number, keep a close to 60% in 2020? or remember, 20 of their classmates never got to leave the first grade, let alone may college plans. they along with six staff members were killed at the sandy hook elementary school massacre almost 12 years ago. tonight, each of their names was called out in remembrance, and two of the graduate spoke with our randy k on the eve of their graduation super excited about heading to college. it s definitely a very bittersweet kind of emotion bittersweet because grace fischer is graduating newtown high school without 20 of her classmates, they were killed in the massacre at sandy hook elementary, nearly 12 years ago emma ehrens was there that horrible day two and lost her best friend thinking about all the what-ifs of what if they were sitting next to me at graduation, what if we were still friends? where would we be? both emma and grace, we re just 6-years-old in 2012 and seated in there first grade classrooms when the gunmen stormed into their school, we thought it was construction because it s been going on for the past couple of days on the roof and then a guy armed came into my classroom and started shooting all of my friends and my teachers and my classmates, his gun and had been jammed and of friend of mine, jesse lewis had yelled at us to run and that s what we did. we sectioned ourselves into the cubby area, which is kind of like an indent. so from the door were absolutely hidden. i remember feeling like i was endangered emma remembers bumping into the gunman in her rush to get out. the boy who yelled to her and others to run jesse lewis was fatally shot on the spot. when you believe he saved your life? i do. i really in the hallway right by the main entrance, there was chairs in front of the office and under the chairs were people because because of the force of impact of the bullets, they were blown under the chairs when we got to the firehouse, we had to line up by grade. and that s when my teacher was really like, this is really not ok. because when we lined up by grade, half, our grade was missing and everyone else was there in the year since both girls have struggled to cope with the memories from that day, i ve gone to therapy for like six or seven years i have survivor s guilt, ptsd. it definitely still like a lot of fear in me. and even now, i don t think i ve been to a single column concert and my entire life just because i m really worried about that big crowd of people and not knowing where to go in case of an emergency. they ve turned some of that anxiety into action. i want to live in a nation that values children more than guns both are members of the junior newtown action alliance, which promotes gun safety. i do not want future kids of america to have to be spared in the classroom. we really are pushing obviously for a federal assault weapons ban ball. so we do shift our focus to safe storage laws and also mental health resources. they ve met with members of congress about gun laws. and just last week, vice president kamala harris. and yet school shootings continue. it s definitely like a knife to the heart when you see it happen again and again after fighting so hard on graduation de the names of those lost were red and ribbons marking the day of the massacre worn in there, honor, because their lives were lost so early and i went through that such an early age. i feel like it s my purpose to continue my life in honor of them i know whatever i do, they will be proud of me. i like to believe that on the most recent anniversary of the shooting, emma posted this photo on her instagram writing in part. i just want to live in a safe world. i miss you guys every day. i hope you are happy in heaven. the picture shows emma with her best friend avl richmond, who died in the shooting i hope you are happy and evan and ready. k is with us now. what strength they all showed there. what are the plans for after graduation? they have plans for college. this fall i m is going to go to roger williams university and she plans to study legal studies and grow race is going to hamilton college and she plans to focus on law and justice. they both really wanted to help people, but my guess is john, that even though they re going away to college, that new town isn t going to be very far from their thoughts. even emma told me during our interview that she still runs this five key and honor of her teacher who was killed every year. and they still visit the memorial on a regular basis. they re in so i think even though they have big plans, there ll be a way new town will be in their hearts. i have to believe that i how did this all come together as far as your learning era and the president and his family are huddling behind closed doors here in their residents wilmington tonight after the president rights only hours ago and was greeted by his son, hunter on the tarmac. now, this was a last-minute trip with sources telling cnn that it was floated late monday night, but came together after the verdict was reached and finalize with the president arriving here again, only a couple well hours ago. but of course this is a family that has often come together over the course of the trial. the first lady in the courtroom, multiple times as these legal proceedings were underway and even coming back from france briefly to attend the trial. and that really underscores the delicate and difficult balance that this president has had to strike with his foreign travel in recent days. and also as these deeply painful family moments, we re planning out in this trial and publicly now, the president did release the statement earlier today, and it was a statement that was frayed seen through the lens of a father, not so much a president where he talks about the resiliency of his son, but also said that he would accept the outcome of the case of the president has previously firm that he would not pardon his son. now, also, hearing wilmington is the biden campaign headquarters and sources telling us that as far as tonight, it is business as usual usual for this very sensitive and delicate issue for the biden family. all right. priscilla, thank you very much. in wilmington. and i d want to go to evan perez now because he s been in the courtroom throughout this trial every day you ve watched the jurors you ve watched the biden family there and i know you just spoke to one of those jurors, evan, what did he tell you well, erin this is? juror number ten. he s man in his stuff, these terms his from southern the southern part of delaware. and one of the things that we heard from the defense team as we were going through this trial was they believed that politics had a role in why hunter biden was even facing these charges. he said the defense team believe that the us attorney who was appointed by donald trump was essentially bullied into going after hunter because of criticism from house republicans and republicans in general. i asked the juror number ten, who did not want to be to show his face on television, whether their politics played any role in these deliberations. listen to what he had to say if anybody, was in that courtroom or in the jury room, they would know it was not motivated by politics politics played no part whatsoever in my mind no. i can t speak for the other jurors but nothing was nothing was ever said about this election year that was never brought up and aaron, we also he also told me that that the gun form that hunter biden signed back in october of 2018 when he bought the firearm that was the crucial piece of evidence in his mind and he believe that hunter biden lied when he signed it, and none of the other evidence from the from the from the defense to try to explain it away, really worked on the part of the jury one of the things that may come up by the defense team, they do they are weighing an appeal of this of this verdict is the fact that jurors never got to see a second oppression at that form, because the judge did not allow it. and so i asked the juror whether he believed that that would have made a difference. he said it would not have aaron sheep all right. i evan, thank you very much. outside that courthouse and having a chance to speak to turn number ten, which was obviously so fast thing is we d we d heard about the jury and their reactions and who they are all right. i m a panel with me now, katie rogers, i want to start with you because you have covered the biden family closely for a long time at the new york times and now we re seeing the president arrive in delaware, greeting his son. what are your sources telling you about how this has impacted president biden personally? well, i think everyone who has spoken to me who is close to the president and close to the bidens. they always really reiterate to me how much the president believes in his sons ability to stay sober. he s very proud on that level of his son and they always stressed to me that, yes, he is worried about the legal problems ahead for hunter biden, but he believes in his son s ability to continue his recovery. now, that said, the people close to him say that this is the thing that more than anything else he wakes up. if he s briefed by aids on gaza, the next immediate get thing is about his son or he is constantly in contact with his son. they speak at least once a day. so this is something that is going to add more weight to the president s mindset. he s already been quite worried about these legal problems, never having an end for his son. and this just adds to that, right? it didn t certainly at a crucial time in this case campaign. congressman buck, i wanted to play something else for you that juror number ten shared with evan perez about hunter biden. let me play it i did have empathy for him, for his addiction i don t wish that on anybody and especially correct. okay. let me let was the has to be a terrible dickson it comes from i think just significant that that juror says that after they unanimously convicted him on all counts. right. but still able to have that human empathy and obviously a lot of americans can relate to that who are dealing with this themselves or with others and their families, some sort sort of addiction the president though is to deal with the political side of this. do you think that he has managed this? appropriately as a father and as a president congressman yeah, i do. i think it s very difficult. you look at your son having an addiction like bad. the federal government, the congress obviously passed this law because folks who are addicted to drugs and buy guns are more likely to commit crimes. so certainly not a hunter biden category necessarily, but i think the joe biden president biden has done a great job of trying to stay above the fray and recognizing that his department of justice was a very difficult position attorney general merrick garland appointed a special counsel s so that that council would be independent and render independent judgment. and i think that people look at this case and recognize that it was done in an independent and fair way the idea that there may have been other crimes are really irrelevant. this this defendant totter biden, got a fair trial, a quick jury verdict, and i think that joe biden made the right statements after the verdict ryan, the thing is this this is not done for hunter biden or for joe biden, the whole family, right? he can still appeal just even on this case, i m i m talking separately from the tax case, which is very serious. but on this case alone, is this going to drag out for the remainder of election between sentencing appeals and all kinds of this process 100% because he s going to both appeal on the grounds that certain evidence should not have been excluded from the defense. and he s going to appeal on the grounds that under the second amendment, the constitution, that this particular criminal provision should be invalid and none of that is going to be sewed up before november. in fact, we ll probably at least a year from now before any of that gets stored up, even conservatively speaking, well, even conservatively speaking. all right, so that s a long time, katie, and it s certainly shows in terms of weighing on the president all the way through the election way beyond, but through the election i mentioned how joe biden, the first lady, was not able to get there in time today because happened so quickly. she wasn t actually able to be in the courtroom for the verdict but she was there almost every day. hunter sister was there is on its uncle a lot of other family members, his daughter testified ex girlfriends wives and we ve seen support from almost all of them on hunter and he s recovery. it has been something that clearly has damaged and hurt this family for a long time. they ve struggled with it what does the conviction mean, katie, for the whole family? busy tuesday night for months, donald trump and republicans have tried to make the case that there is a two tiered justice system one system of justice for trump and one for everybody else. there are tax goes something like this that the justice department is being weaponized against donald trump. and donald trump only at direction of president biden. never mind that trump and his allies are also claiming that biden is slipping mentally while at the same time orchestrating that conspiracy set that aside. just consider the trump-world allegation that biden is behind this plot. two persecute the former president just so you understand this is all done by biden and his people maybe as people more importantly, democrats across the slide they ve crossed the line in which now the court system is a political weapon. this department of justice, the biden department of justice he is the most partisan department of justice in our nation s history today that same biden department of justice secured a conviction against the president s son, hunter, guilty on all three counts for lying about his drug use when he purchased a gun here is david weiss, the special counsel leading the case no one in this country is above the law. everyone must be accountable for their actions. i want to thank attorney general garland for providing the support necessary to fulfill our mission. that s why it s thanking the attorney general for ensuring that he has independence. the same attorney general that the former president and his allies have relentlessly accused without evidence of conspiring to get trump s today. some of those trump allies accused the biden administration of pursuing a conviction of hunter basically accusing the president of sacrificing his own son to continue that conspiracy. former trump white house adviser stephen miller posted this. take a look at this. the gun charges he says are a misdirection, don t be gasland. this is all about protecting joe biden don t be gaslight. indeed, new tonight, the new york times reports hunter biden s conviction not only undercuts trump s narrative, but also hurts his campaigns fundraising efforts, citing a person familiar, the time says, quote, there had been discussions about how much an acquittal of hunter biden would help mr. trump? potentially raising tens of millions of additional dollars as they plan to cite it as more evidence. the justice system was rigged oops it s an ai, democrats on the hill noted their response to the biden conviction was different. we re not here contesting the results. were not here trying to defund the fbi or the department of justice because we don t like the outcome of a of a given trial we respect the judicial process, which we respect the outcome of it for his part, president biden two, it says he accepts the outcome of the case, and we ll respect it. he issued that statement before he changed the schedule to be with his son, fleming fine. to wilmington, delaware, where he remains the night photographer. you can see right? they re capturing their embrace hey, shortly after the president landed on the tarmac. now i want to get to brandy harden, a criminal defense attorney, liam donovan, former national republican senatorial campaign committee aid and karen funny a cnn legal commentator. brandy, i so let s let s jump right into this. republicans still saying that doj is a big weapon but against them, does that hold up anymore? let s listen to a speaker johnson. he was talking to our manu raju and other reporters about this verdict will talk about the other side every case is different. and clearly the evidence is overwhelming here. i don t think that s the case and the trump trials and all the charges that have been brought again, obviously brought for political purposes. hunter biden is a separate instance separate instance. the speaker say separate incidents, and so i think, look, this convictions certainly undercuts the theory that there are two there s a two tier justice system in reality, there s not one system for donald trump in one system for other folks in reality, we see that this conviction stands that when the government sets their sights on you, when they think that you ve committed a crime, they re gonna go after you and just like what happened here, a jury of your peers is going to listen, is going to figure out what happens. and here there was a guilty verdict yeah. and leon, the new york times, reporting that the trump campaign plan to raise millions of dollars off of 100 biden acquittal, i guess that s oh, well, i guess that s not gonna work out now what do you make of that? well, i mean, it s certainly makes sense if you re trying to play into the cynical idea that the system is rigged, that would certainly be prove it. i think well, with the punches though, if you start with that premise, then you can use that to any anything can come back and affirm that. so there s there s nothing that can prove the negative the system s not rigged, not a conviction of hunter biden. i mean, look, this would never should have gone to trial was supposed to be a plea deal. the plea deal fell apart. this also doesn t resolve because there s going to be a tax trial that comes up in september. it s just a mess. nobody s actually satisfied the president. but what do you sent through a tax trial to get help right? exactly what where does the conspiracy end? all the way up and then sanity begin? but here s this so cynical and discussing about that anybody who is dealt with addiction or it has people that they know deal with addiction it is a journey to stay clean, right? and the idea that the president would want to risk his child sobriety for the presidency. i get why in donald trump s mind that might make sense because that s how he thinks about things, right? is how do i work the angles to get the result i want, but the thought of joe biden doing that after again, i think what s important about today, i think about the contrast here you have a man who has this is a guy who has taken punches throughout his life. joe biden and he gets back up and he s resilient and he has figured out how to say, look, i love my son, but the law is the law versus trump, who acts like a spoiled brat, who just doesn t get his way yeah. i mean liam, the trump campaign saying in a statement, we put this up on screen. this trial has been nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the biden crime family and limb. people buy this stuff. i think there is a separate issue. i mean, truly if you look at this, this is kind of the it s the bragg case of the hunter charges. it really is small potatoes. i mean, i don t think republicans truly do believe there are other things that foot here they. haven t produced the goods though. they haven t been able to put together a case in the house of representatives that would that would be able to pursue this. i know that the oversight committee is tried, but there are big things that you re going to call the biden crime family. should you have are tied to the president, wears we re doing we re doing hot dogs later ron, those out. we ll look at for the nothing now, you know, that s why i think we are where we are. they talk a good game. they talk like there s going to be something else. but in reality, this is it. this is what they have. this is the case that they have and ultimately it s resulted in a conviction. yeah. and brandie, a juror ten, spoke to cnn about the decision all 12 jurors did agree that yes, he know and laying bought a gun when he was an attic or he was addicted to drugs yeah. i know everything gets thrown into the political meat grinder in dc. but again, this is further validation of the jury system that we have in this country. it s, it s not perfect. it s flawed. our justice system is why there s no doubt about that but in the trump case, you had a jury of men and women doing their job, doing their civic duty. they came to a verdict. they issued that verdict. same in this case, saving this point in new york one and delaware, you know, it s really important that we rely on the jury system. i mean, we call it a jury of your peers, whether it s actually your peers or not, it s 12 people who listen to the evidence and make get decision. one of the things that i think is so problematic here though, is that why is this? i mean, you shouldn t be able to lie on an application, but with respect to whether or not he was addicted, i mean, that just takes it another step and i think it s sad that he was struggling with addiction is sad ultimately that he said what he said on the application, but i do think that the jury system i m has 12 people decide what the evidence is and i listened to what the juror said the jury seem to say the fact that he s in the biden family had nothing to do with the case although in reality, everyone knew it was joe biden son and so even if it was in the back of their minds, they may have been at the front of their mind, but certainly it was something that everyone was aware of apparently it didn t, impact the verdict. this ties back to this larger theme about democracy that we ve been talking about, right? because there is a part of democracy that is a leap of faith. you have to have a leap of faith that you go into the system 12 people are going to listen to the evidence and make a decision and you abide by that decision, you have a right to appeal, you have a right, you write, you have plenty of rights, under house that hunter has that right there s rather, you know, exactly. and so but that s democracy that and when some of the commentary that we re seeing from republican let s the whole fact that the trump campaign initially put out a statement that had sympathy for hunter and then pull that back. i mean, all that does is undermine people s belief in our democracy and in our systems at a time when we actually should be reaffirming into your point, it s not perfect. there s so much work we need to do. but this is our system and we ve got to work with it. and by undermining it actually makes us less safe as a country tree. and the jury system works. i mean, at the end of the day and we re gonna for a long time, it worked and so regardless of how perfect it is, one way or the other, 12 people look at the evidence, they listen, sometimes say they get it wrong, sometimes they get it right, but the jury system works and leave just very quickly. there s a bob menendez trial going on henry cuellar trial going i mean, there are other trials of prominent democrats going on right now. i think the tricky part is and you re exactly right, but i think the tricky part is if you look at these piecemeal, you can say, well, this just proves the democrats are corrupt in this case of menendez or whomever. i think the tricky part is, as you say, i think there is trust in these institutions. but when we start to, when we start to talk about the supreme court, we start to talk about judge cannon and we pick apart things that maybe it looks like it s not on the level in other areas. i think it s hard to make these cases that we need to trust in the system if we re not bringing that across the board fair point, our guys, thank you very much. great discussion. i appreciate it tonight the bidens are huddling together in their delaware home to be with their son, hunter and addressing the verdict, the president said he could relate to families who have had loved ones battling addiction, saying quote, i am the president, but i am also a dad, jill, and i love our son and we are so proud of the man and he is today and chris whipple joins me now he s the author of the fight of his life inside joe biden s white house chris good to see you. i see you studied the bidens for a long time. how painful is this moment for the president yeah, i think it s extremely painful, just heart wrenching and it s impossible to overstate date just how close joe and hunter biden arnon it goes all the way back to that horrific car crash in 1972, which hunter and beau barely survived. it s the reason why we ve been seeing him holding him close through throughout the trial and jill biden has been there and why you see these continuing statements of support? i mean, i think that for joe biden, this is a personal tragedy at a political windfall because i think that politically, i just don t see any downside soup so many people, so many americans can relate to a father, loving and supporting his son why? and chris, we were talking about this new york times piece that s out this evening where the trump campaign has sort of analyze this various different ways of how a biden acquittal or conviction might play out. one of the things that says in that story is that the former president has been talking about hunter biden a whole lot less out on the campaign trail in part because the former president thinks that there s some sympathy out there for the current president because of what his son has been going through. and it is worth reminding our viewers just how much tragedy, personal tragedy, the president, the united states has endured over his life. and it has shaped him. it s made him the man he is. now. it s absolutely true and i think that look, i think a lot of the joe biden s advisers are keeping a close eye on him, not because they re worried about the political fallout as i say, i think that s nothing but upside, but i think they re just worried about him personally. they re worried about having to shoulder this on top of the burdens of the presidency. this is a guy who s got a lot of stuff on his plate but again, politically, i think there s no downside. i thought so even before the verdict and after the verdict, even more so because the guilty verdict gives the lie to the notion that joe biden is some kind of puppeteer who weaponized as the department of justice punishing his enemies it s and freeing his friends, obviously hundred biden never would have seen the inside of a courtroom if that were the case. and i think luck we ve got a debate coming up and i don t think joe biden, would ever go there. i don t think he ll bring it up but let me tell you if donald trump is makes the mistake of going there and spewing nonsense about the biden crime family. i think joe will be prepared. mean can you imagine if that happened? joe biden saying, look, last time i checked you were guilty of 34 felonies i m guilty of loving my son yeah. and chris, the president, has said that he will not pardon his son. what did you think of that? i thought it was extraordinary. i mean, it was it was a moment of just moral clarity on the part of joe biden and couldn t have been in starker contrast to the way donald trump has handled his own conviction so i think it was extraordinary when he was asked will you will you accept the verdict, whatever it is? he said? yes. would you and then again, what would you rule out a pardon? yes. you can t be much more clear than that. all right. for swivel a great discussion. thanks so much for your windsor, she is the person behind those secret recordings. lauren, great to see you again, we talked to you earlier this morning thanks for coming back on. walk us through this. i can first of all, why did you want to get these justices on tape? and was it tough when you walked up to them where they more reserved at first digit to warm them up. how did it work? well, so it went to two different dinners. there s one and 20231 and 2024, at the first one? i spoke with justice alito only there were several justices there, but we had a good conversation. i had gone initially because of propublica reporting on clarence thomas so i thought at the time, will he be there? will he not who knows, but the reporting is it s like one of his favorite dinners so i thought there was a good chance he was not there. harlan crow is not there to my knowledge but justice alito was and so i had a conversation with him about how do we repair this partisan rift in our country that s right. they didn t say partisan rather, sorry. how do we repair the polarization in this country at the time he responded really and newsworthy way it was. i don t know. i don t know. that s not really a role. so he didn t publish that audio. but then this was before he actually went under the glare of propublica is fantastic reporting, right and so i imagined that because of that he might be more aggrieved and i might have a second shot at that this year. and sure enough, when i asked him similar questions, he had a much different response. and let s talk about what he had to say. they re about pro public. i mean, it is odd to say the leaves to see a supreme court justice or hear a supreme court justice go after a news organization which by the way, for propublica did a perfectly legitimate series of new stories on what was going on at the supreme court. and it s raised all sorts of questions about the ethics there there have been calls for ethics, codes and so on, because of that, they ve wonderful is a private one that they did they did honestly, i have no idea what propublica is budget is, but let s just say that what is it 4 million that i think that clarence thomas is accepted in gifts from donors. i would, imagine that given that it s an independent newsroom, that the annual budget probably rivals the amount that clarence thomas is taken in donations that he hasn t reported. do i know for sure? i don t know. i just you know, if you re talking about millions of dollars there that you didn t report and justice alito is saying, oh, they ve spent a fortune on going after clarence thomas. let s look at that relative. were you surprised that he was as candid with you as he comes across and as mrs. alito comes across, i mean, what what surprised you the most? it was very surprised in my so just to give some more context to this, i spoke with justice alito at the cocktail reception before. that s nris spoke with mrs. alito after the dinner? and i was surprised with him because when i went, i honestly thought these justices, they have to exercise discretion all the time. and so it wasn t surprised the first year when it wasn t newsworthy. the second year i go back. okay. we ll try again and see if we get something newsworthy so as i m standing there and having this conversation with him, it s blowing my mind when he says there are fundamental things that can t be compromised. and so to me that s okay. well, wow what are those fundamental things that can t be compromised because it s clearly is going to affect how you rule on really critical decisions that are impacting the lives of americans every day yeah and i know you and i talked about this earlier this morning, but just in case the viewers have missed that, are watching now let s talk about tactics and the way you went about doing this when i was talking to you earlier this morning, you said spare me the pearl-clutching but what about the folks at home who might be saying, oh, you know what, she shouldn t have misrepresented who she was, she should just go in there and say, hey, i m i m doing this investigation, talk to me well, you know, if i were to walk up to someone and say, hi, i m a journalists, would you please tell me that you have a lack of impartiality. that s not something you re really going to be candid about. and it really goes to the genesis. i ve done undercover reporting for a long time back to a huge scoop that i had in 2014 with the koch brothers it s reserved for events or situations where you re not going to get information. really any other way. and in this particular circumstance, they re not forthcoming. there already evading any accountability measures whatsoever. and so is it worse for me too? tend to be a fan girl or is it worse for them to not disclose millions of dollars worth of gifts from gop donors let s talk about relative ethics violations here. i think that what i m doing is in service of knowledge for the public good, the greater good for all of us congress needs to take action this i shouldn t have to do this it should be congress and this should be the media holding these justice. justice is two accounts is say your public service as part of the problem, the supreme court is unaccountable course. it isn t accountable. they can get ethics reform passed you know, why are we having congressional hearings into this? i think any reasonable person would say that clarence thomas let s getting his mother s house paid for or his nephews tuition paid for or an rv loan, much of which was forgiven. all of these things, any from about 13% to 9%. so look out of a cohort of 34 million or so, 17 to 24 year-olds we can only seem to generate 500,000 or so that are qualified and interested in serving. so this is, this is a matter i m deeply concerned about. it s not going to bite us today or tomorrow. but if these trends continue in their cultural there lifestyle trends, if they continue, we re going to find ourselves in a bad situation when it comes to the all voluntary force, 5810 years from now let me ask you about the political dimensions of this, because trump says he doesn t. this is not his idea, but he famously calls some american veterans who died in we re losers and suckers does trump s past comments about the military make recruiting more difficult i mean, can you imagine something like this happening in a second trump term after what he has said about fallen american heroes there are a number of things that have made recruiting difficult coming from both sides of the aisle, frankly, but i think it s the bigger issues in our country. i mean, the bottom line is that america s youth just are not familiar with americans military, with the one-half of 1% that serves and defense them. and that s the challenges we had to grow that with a close that knowledge gap among america s youth. so i think there are a number of ways to address that. measures that are far less radical than then reinstating a draft. things such as expanding j rotc and making sure that recruiters are guaranteed full access to high schools too. to simple things like bringing back physical fitness to high school students every day. and when they go to school and high school, things like that, they could really improve the pool of applicants. because right now, they just simply don t know that these are credible career fields and we don t want to go the way of mandatory service because what s really made the american military great since the draft was ended in 1973, was affected, they re all volunteers. they re professionals who want to serve. they want to be there. they want to do right by their country. and that s makes our military so capable and so great you and i were talking before the segment about various things and i asked about d-day. and, you know, my thoughts. i mean, there s still with those amazing veterans that we saw on june 6, last week. you know, these these men who and women who we are in their late 90s and 100s, just a stunning and just stirring example of bravery to americans all over the country have you been able to put your finger on what has been lost in and why? maybe americans just don t have the same reverence for military service that we have for the greatest generation for the people who fought on d-day know what i mean yeah, there are tremendous generation toughened by the depression of course. and then brought together by the spread of naziism. and of course imperial japan in world war ii they re just remarkable and they thought that war for four years and then came back home and went straight to work and raised families and built america into what she is today. but look i think that ember is still there in the hearts of america s youth. i see when i visit the academies, when i used to go to visit basic training or units out in the field, i think it s still there but again, they re a distance is grown between the american population and the military that serves them. and we have to bring them back together and we need our national leaders to go out there and talk about the virtues of military service, about what it means to help one another to serve one another. and i do think there is also a virtue and bring them, bringing the americans together from all democrats graphics from all ethnic groups, from all religious and racism, bringing them together that would go a long distance to helping bring our country together, make us more cohesive. as cohesive as the greatest generation was nearly 80 years ago now. yeah, and i should note, you and i both though after 911, we saw the same kind of patriotic response. inside this country. and so does somebody extent what chris miller is saying is that maybe we need to bring back mandatory service because that doesn t exist anymore. but if there were to be a national crisis, international crisis, i agree with you. i think americans, young americans would respond in the deliberating a verdict could come this morning breaking this morning, a suspect arrested for stabbing for americans in china the video censored on chinese social media. new questions this morning about what happened and why health experts expressing concern that a bird flu outbreak in the united states could become a much bigger problem there are a assignor is out today. i m john berman with kate bolduan. this is cnn news central happening now alive, look at the federal court in wilmington, delaware, where everyone is waiting for work when the jury now they will be resuming deliberations in hunter biden s federal gun trial. they met for only about one our yesterday. so maybe they have hours of work ahead, but word could come any moment really, the jury is weighing three felony gun charges against the president s son. that together here gray maximum penalty of 25 years if convicted, cnn s evan perez is outside the court, and then it was a big day of closing arguments yesterday. what s expected today? okay. we have the jurors reconvening this morning. as you pointed out, they they had about an hour of deliberations before the and at the de and the judge said they would just come straight back into the jury deliberation deliberation room and reconvene this morning and go through these three charges they they have a form that tells them the standards, the different elements that they have to unanimously agree on in order to reach a verdict. and those include of course the idea that 100 knowingly violated the law when he bought a firearm in october of 2018, that he knew he was addicted to drugs when he filled out that form and according to process to curators, when he lied in, be in order to be able to get through a background check those are the elements that are at the center of this. we saw the jurors yesterday after about an hour. they seem to have started forming a bond at a couple of them, walked out arm in arm as they exited, smiling. these are jurors who have been very, very attentive. they ve been taking notes during this trial over five days over really not a lot in dispute in this case. in the end, they re going to have to reach a verdict on someone who is very well known in this community. you saw the biden family come out in force for them yesterday, 33 rows of seats it s were taken up by members of the community, including an african american church that is doing a prayer service for him every morning, kate talk to me about some of the high points they came out during closing arguments and some of the final things really that the jury heard before they started deliberating yeah. look, it was a very, very tough battle really between this that the lawyers involved here, we had abbe lowell who is 100 attorney, who used a a series of presentations to list what he says. we re holes in the case on the part of the prosecution. he said these were all reasons for reasonable doubt. he also accused prosecutors of rehearsing with witnesses and he accused prosecutors also have been to nail bit noisy. naomi biden, who is a hunter biden s daughter, who testified here, one of the last witnesses and asking her whether she did rugs, something that really caused a lot of emotion from her and from her father that day. on the part of the prosecution, they said, look, hunter biden new, he was addicted to drugs. anyone who puts a crackpipe to their mouth every 15 minutes knows he s an advocate evan perez thank, you so much, kevin, as always, johnson, would this now cnn legal analyst, jennifer rodgers, counselor, we heard from evan there that the prosecution in their closing arguments may direct reference to people in the gallery which included at some points that first lady hunter biden s why biden family members in did so some people who are watching said pretty aggressively, what s your takeaway there? yeah, i was surprised at that. actually, i m not surprised that they address that he had so many supporters there, but i would have done it differently because the risk to the prosecution is that people really sympathize with hundred for biden. there s a narrow pathway for them to find him not guilty, but i think it does require them to really have sympathy for him to get there. and so i would have done it by saying you see, he has a lot of support. we all know addiction is a terrible thing. you might find yourself sympathizing with him, but your job as jurors is to follow the law you have taken an oath that requires you to put aside your sympathy and to look at the facts here. that s what i would have done instead of kinda point, they are not evidence. ignore them. i think that s handling it the wrong way because if they aren t, we don t know for sure, but if they are sympathetic to the biden family you re sort of guilty the jurors are your sort of yelling at them about that? yeah. it s not the right take. i mean, listen in order to acquit or even to hang at least some of them have to find this whole thing about did he knowingly make the false statement? and when you look at all the evidence around his use, not in those two weeks necessarily, but around that time. that s hard to do. so i do feel like the judges have the jury had to do a little bit of nullifying here in order to find him not guilty and guilting them into the sympathy is not the way to avoid that. the judge and the jury instructions seem to make pretty clear that the prosecution version of the law is the one to follow here, which is to say, we don t have to prove that hunter biden knew he was addicted the minute the pen hit the paper right there at that moment or that he was using drugs the minute the pen hit the paper at that moment that s right. and prosecutors always emphasized to use your common sense, right? someone comes out of rehab. they described themselves for years later is an addict. he knows he s an addict. use your common sense but you should find jurors walking hand in hand, eyelid courtroom. that s a little unusual. yeah, i haven t seen that before. they often do get close. they spend a lot of time together sometimes they are at odds, sometimes they re not. it s not uncommon for them to form friendships in the arm in arm, i really haven t heard before. maybe this is a particularly close group, but listen, they need to be closer at least in agreement in order to reach a unanimous verdict. so i suppose that s a good sign for prosecutors know i know people who write lifetime movies. i mean, this could be a good plot. his strange plot for the beginning of something kinda lifetime romance there. the jury is in delaware, which is a very democratic state in wilmington, which is a very biden city that binds have been there for decades it s in decades and decades yeah. how much will that play in the jury room? i sadly don t. and i m not as positive towards the whole development. i would love to see our hostages home are 120 hostages home? and i would want to see israel defeat hamas and return safety to southern israel and improve the situation in gaza but i think that if you re sinwar is in his text messages, he he hits the nail on the head. sadly. and for months hamas has been manipulating global public opinion using international politics. the differences between washington and jerusalem, and they have basically been able to stay alive and stay out of jail using the hostages for about 345 months and that s something that i think is the core of hamas strategy to delay and delay as much as possible using the hostages and kind of try to derail israeli operations in gaza so that the war will end without israel defeating hamas. that s the zero-sum game. and i think that s sinwar doesn t really have a strong incentive they ve to go ahead and release hostages and basically end the war because that is his best tool to stay alive and to keep hamas empowering gaza. let me ask you about that. so the wall street journal reporting, cnn is not seeing the wall street journal message. the message is that the wall street journal s reporting cannot confirm the authenticity of them. still, i want to read some more of the reporting from the journal. we have the israelis right where we want them. we read. it was one message and these are messages to the negotiators of the sea, to the ceasefire negotiators is what and this is another one in one message two, hamas leaders in doha, sin more cited civilian losses and national liberation conflict thaksin places such as algeria, where hundreds of thousands of people died fighting for independence from france saying quote, these are necessary sacrifices here s the thing. if this is the case, if this is the zero sum game that you re talking about, if this is the strategy how does israel take on hamas take out hamas deal with sinwar without playing into his hands that s a good question, and i think that the israeli strategy has been so far to try to get to sinwar, get to the senior leadership of hamas so far not succeeding probably because he is hidden underground with lots of israeli hostages surrounding him as human shields and so far what israel said he hasn t been able to do is to advance fast enough and to get to sinwar and basically decide the battle it took israel many months of staging in order to finally get into rafah. there was tremendous outcry and there were protests that israel shouldn t and mustn t go into rafah. israel easing enough. and there s no humanitarian catastrophe and there s no mass casualty event which proves that is can and should do what it s doing. here is a humanitarian crisis throughout gaza now you ve definitely yes, but i m talking there s not a slaughter and not a catastrophe like people warned that there will you think some have thought hoped maybe conjectured that the rescue operation from the weekend could have changed the calculus. they re getting three men out, men that were not supposed to be in the first batch of any ceasefire negotiation can getting those hostages. do you think do you think that changes the calculations are discussing for hamas? do you think that could scare them to the table it s a very happy event, but eventually it only proves that i think it strengthens the case of getting hostages out via negotiations because i don t think that is what has the intelligence capacity or the otherwise military capacity to get more hostages out like this, because this was a top of the shelf special operations with weeks of preparation, intel tip of the spear israeli commando units i ve got in gaza job done, got the hostages out and i don t think that will sadly have the ability to do so over and over again. and i don t think that it changes the calculation and i think that iran hizballah or a much bigger threat, you know, we re focused on gaza and small details in gaza. the big deal and the big threat to regional stability is hizballah against this. well, and if you look at where alarms or sounding most in israel, it s in northern israel and its rockets and drones, et cetera. and sadly, when you re talking about where israel situated, all it s all big crisis. it s all big alarms that are sound from hamas in gaza to the neighbors around with funded and funded and supplied and supported by iran on in terms of the motivation and position of prime minister benjamin netanyahu, blinken says that he reaffirmed his support for today, but president biden told time magazine in a very recent interview, and here s how he put it. there is every reason for people to draw the conclusion that netanyahu is prolonging the war for his own political gain what s your reaction to them? as an israeli, as a father two children who will soon be serving in the military. i really, really hope that isn t true. and i would like to see evidence that states the otherwise from my elected leadership. i think it s very important and what we lacked now in israel is unity and trust. we are as you rightly said, surrounded by so many enemies that are challenging or very existence. and what s the israeli public now is going through. this battle fatigue, eight months of fighting, relentless alarms and sirens and 100,000 people are evacuated from their homes. in northern israel. and the war goes on. we had four casualties reported just this morning. lots of pressure on israeli society and what s desperately needed is unity is leadership. and to take, carry israel forward in what i think will be the coming years, not months, the coming years will be very challenging you don t think president biden was so off off-base to say that? what both are true. it s an incredibly creepy, i m sorry, i know it s morning. i just threw up a little bit. my mouth. when you read those quotes today, it s just disgusting thing and mr. corruption mr. trump should pay himself hush money. you should just shut up about taylor swift and you can tell he is scared of her trump understand celebrity. he understands the power celebrity that s how he got where he is. ms swift is far more powerful as a celebrity than donald trump ever dreamed. a big and so he s clearly scared of her. and i find that wonderful and amusing, even though the comments about her appearance deeply creepy. sure. michael, i was trying to think if there was another figure who people have politicians have had to walk on eggshells around. you have to be really careful with no matter what you say or how they feel about you. and i was sick. maybe oprah when oprah went behind barak obama in 2007, 2008, everyone, hillary clinton s campaign and had to be really careful than john mccain s campaign had to be really careful. i can t really think of everyone else, anyone else that would make a politician so nervous. i mean, john, i can think of one other person and i think that would be bianna. and i have to say this because my girlfriend were kill me if i did not. one other the person that i think a lot of politicians out to be very, very careful with the lead. i think a lot of these celebrities and younger voters, attractiveness to them not only because of their music, but their lifestyles and also the way they live vicariously by the politics that they adopt is certainly a pervasive thing. if you re a politician right now, trying to win the left section, which we know will be very close and you want to galvanize young people you certainly don t want to anger them by attacking some of the individuals they look up to and i think this is the case. we re taylor swift who is an incredible songwriter. so here s someone who galvanized is not only young liberals, john, but she also galvanizes young conservatives be in a former country star who s now i want to pop music. so there s an interesting dichotomy here. but i think the former president is trying to thread the needle on. i know the biden campaign would love it to taylor swift came out in public and endorse the biden candidacy like she did in 2020. they are waiting for that to happen. i was looking at the calendar, paul, i still can t wrap my arms around the fact that there is a general election presidential debate in like two weeks and yes, it is right here on cnn. and i m not doing this to promote the debate which is, i should note right here on cnn but it just shatters everything i know about presidential campaigns in its drawings. i covered george bush in 2000 and he disappeared for days before the first debate for debate prep in it, we learn later that he d been preparing like a ton for months before should these candidates deep into debate prep for what could be the most important presidential debate any of us have ever seen oh yeah, debates do tend to freeze the campaign and our president has to go to europe for g7 meeting and if i were campaign strategies for him, i would be tearing the last three hairs out of my head. but you can use that time on air force one. so let s watch them manifest on air force one. if my old pal ron klain, president s former chief of staff is on that trip. i mean, they re doing to bake prep on the plane. no one i ve done all my adult life. no one is better at debate prep than the president s former chief of staff, ron klain. but they do need to do. and by the way, so does mr. trump and i know he doesn t like it i shouldn t say this because debates are about expectations joe biden is going to climb donald trump in that debate. incumbent presidents rarely, rarely when the first debate, because they re used to having their rings kissed, shall we say? but mr. trump has talent. he does, and he s great at these rallies but he s never won a national presidential general election debate. he had to three against hillary, two gets biden in the polling, one or two point race, he consistently loses those debates by nine to 12 points. so honest earnest, free advice to mr. trump you need to hunker down and prepare for this. mr. mr. trump and i promise you, joe biden is you just broke the major one rule of pre debate expectations, right there. you re gonna get a golf. i spoke the truth apartment. i try never to do that with you, but once in a while sure. michael, if you are the trump campaign, a. the likelihood that they follow paul s advice and donald trump goes into debate prep. if you are donald trump or if you are the trunk campaign, what kind of prep would you have him do i mean luck in 2016, he had chris christie helping them out. chris christie and entrepreneur longer friends, so i don t think you can call up chris and say, hey, come and help us but i agree with paul. presidents usually don t do well during the first debate. so this is a very unique opportunity for the former president. and i think donald trump is really effective. john, at being able to communicate very simply in a simple way rather on issues that people really care about. so if you can figure out a way to drive and hone in that skill and more focused way on actual issues. i think the former president could potentially surprise people, but you have to be disciplined in order to do so. so i was spent a couple of days, maybe a week or so practicing these things, maybe some of his best zynga s figuring out a way to be more surgical with them during that one hour debate. and let s see what happens. but this could be, and i ll say this quickly, john. i don t think trump should debate president for a second time because to pause zero point presidents don t do well during the first debate, but they usually come back and knock it out of the park during the second debate. so if i m trump, i would try to hammer this in with a victory and say, you know what, that s it. i m not interested in debating number two. paul, very quickly share michael said the issues one of the issues is crime usually is an issue every four years and these new numbers out from the fbi, violent crime, going down, murder rate dropping dramatically could be the biggest drop. on record in one year how should the buying campaign talk about this in a way that it will connect with people absolutely. and i think it all about mr. trump catering to the most extreme and joe biden, big part of the mainstream are, let s report is right. young people and people of color really support the biden gun safety genic. guess what? or is it is it not, is it there s something else and what they think at this point is that it s doesn t necessarily appear to be more severe. it may be that they, the third person got infected in a different way. first two people may have touched the surface than touch their eyes, which is what often happens. this the third person who is a farm worker in michigan may have actually inhaled some of the virus. that s worth paying attention to what they have not seen. kate. and this is a big thing that they look out for. is there evidence then it spreads as a result of those respiratory symptoms to another human human, to human spread. and so far at this point, they have not seen that, but that s what they re looking for. in short of that, what are the other red flags that they re wanting four yeah. i think one thing is to see a look are there other mammals that are starting to get infected? there s lots of different mammals that have been infected so far. but are there other ones as well? because each time you get new mammals that are infected, especially ones that are closer and closer to humans you may, the virus may mutate into something that can more easily infect humans and they, and could potentially spread among humans. but one of the big ways to figure this out is tested sting. and kate, we talked about this a lot during the pandemic. are we doing enough testing? courtroom at nine and wish them a good morning. they can go straight to the jury box and once they are all here here today, they can resume those deliberations on the three felony charges that hunter biden is facing for allegedly purchasing and possessing a gun while addicted to it is illegal drugs. now, i should note that, yes, there are three top line charges here, but underneath each one of those counts are a series of elements of each crime that the jurors need to deliberate and degree on unanimously for each element of each crime that s in this indictment. look, you mentioned it he is convicted on all three charges he could face prison time up to 25 years. that seems highly unlikely though, given the fact that he is a first-time offender. but as we sit here, for and wait for the verdict, the fate of the president s son is in the hands of those 12 jurors from delaware six men and six women. there ll be back in about one hour to finish up marshall, we ve seen the first lady going into court. we know that a hunter biden s other members of hunter biden s family have also been in the courtroom as any family does. and can to show their support for him. but that became part what people think about this trial? well, in terms of how hunter biden has been treated. yeah. you know, there s this real thing. what hunter biden even be on trial if he wasn t the president s son, there are a lot of folks who are on hunter biden signed are and joe biden cited say they wouldn t even be brought. that s not necessarily the case. all right. according to the public legal systems treatment of hunter bye. now, this was after the criminal indictments of them, but before this most recent trial, look at is 66% set of americans say that the legal system, treatment of hunter biden has been fair. in fact according to the polling, if anything, they think it s been not harsh enough on him. just 27% of americans think that the legal system has been unfair. so the fact is, most americans have no problem with hunter biden being on trial. his favorite bility ratings are quite low and it s something thank when you look at the polling, why the white house i think is genuinely worried because he s definitely in their minds potentially a liability for me, at least outside of joe biden and think that, well, the important thing to remember is that it s hunter biden? correct. who is on trial here, not president joe biden, but there is some data in terms of what the public thinks about the president in how he views are is i guess connected to his son. yeah. you know, sort of my leading question here. all right. hunter biden s legal troubles and joe biden, hunter hunters troubles are related to joe 46% related to juror, correct? i m related to job. thank you. 46% say that is believable that they were unrelated to joe. that is the plurality believe it is unrelated to joe biden, just 37% of americans believe that is not believe well, that s a good number for joe biden. how about this joe biden is a good dad by supporting his son, the clear majority, 54% say that that is believable, and this is, i think the polling that joe biden sort of two, is listening to saying, you know, what first off, i don t necessarily care about the public, but secondly, i think the public thinks i d be a pretty good dad by supporting his son. yeah, he may not be looking at the polling all at all when it comes to his public statements about this trial or his son, he may just being a dead dead. what is the potential impact on the left? yeah. a very probably not much at all because the clear majority of folks believed that hunter biden s illegal troubles. they have no impact on their vote. yes, there s this 23% who say they re less likely to vote for joe biden. but you know who that is, 23% are there republicans who weren t going to vote for joe biden anyway? or 4%. therefore, who say it s more likely to vote for joe biden, but you can get for free percent of americans to basically say hard to see the logic there. all right, harriet and great to see you much some police in china have now arrested a man. they say stabbed for americans in broad daylight in the first three three months of this year, murders are down 26% reported rapes decreased by nearly 26% aggravated assault is down. robberies or down, you look at property crimes, the same trend their burgers have dropped nearly 17%. motor vehicle thefts have decreased about 17%. so across the board and regions across the united how did it states they re seeing these drops based on this initial data i particularly want it focused in on murders. now, there s a caveat, obviously, this prelim preliminary, the year isn t up yet, but murder right now is down by 80% in places like boston, over 40% in cities like new orleans seattle, baltimore, and fill it dell fea, murder spiked about 30% during the pandemic, but then started to fall. i ve been talking with crime data analysts who say that if these numbers now hold, we could see a potential historic drop here throughout the rest of this year. so as we look at this trend some, obviously some promising data when you look at prime across the country, john, look this is the type of data that i imagine everyone, all of the evidence that we have so far is showing a basically a double decline relative to what it was last year at this point, last year, it was down about ten or 11%. now we re talking 19 or 20%. it s plausible that this will be by far the largest one-year decline in american history. so obviously one of the analysts, we were speaking with, and as you were saying they re john, i mean, we often focused on a lot of different facts and figures in life. nothing more personal than when we re talking about so new this morning a panel of independent advisers to the fda gave their approval to eli lilly s experimental alzheimer s drug is still has to get full approval from the agency, but it has a lot of people excited. our chief medical correspondent, dr. sanjay gupta is year. what are we talking about here? sanjay? good morning, john yeah, potentially a big deal here there are no drugs to cure or to prevent alzheimer. so what we re talking about here are medications that can slow the progression of symptoms once they start. and if this gets approved this would now be the second drug that could do that sort of thing. as you know, john, the fda advisory committee that s an independent committee. they make their recommendations. they recommended this be approved. the fda usually follows her guidance, not always, but this is certainly a good sign and that approval could come by the end of the year so for this particular study, they looked at 1,700 people, just over 1,700 people between the ages of 6085 and these were people who had mild cognitive impairment. so this was early part of their diagnosis, early part of their disease and they gave them this drug and what they found was that over time, over 76 weeks that about a 29% reduction in cognitive decline. so they got worse, more slowly. it s not that they reverse the disease. it s not that they stalled the disease. they got worse more slowly, about 29%. so that is the big number in terms of benefit. the committee was paying attention to. on the flip side of that, let me tell you quickly, john, is the risks there are risks of these drugs specifically something known as aria, which stands for amyloid related imaging abnormality. you don t need to remember that, but basically it s these bleeds that can occur in the brain in response to the drug and what they found was about 37% of the people who are getting the medication compared to placebo, 14% did have evidence of these, these changes in the brain related to the amyloid. three people did die as well in that trial. so that was something that committee looked at very, very closely and still determined that the benefits outweigh the risks. john sanjay two very important questions. number one, how do you say the drugs named? because i can t make it out. i can t make sense of that in number two, how exactly does this one work yeah so the nonna mab and mab, which you hear at the end of a lot of these drugs, stands for monoclonal antibody. the other drug that i was talking about, lecanemab also a monoclonal antibody and a lot of people know monoclonal antibodies. they learned about them during the pandemic. but you re essentially giving the antibodies as part of the drug let me show you this quick animation of how it works. you know, amyloid is this protein plaque that builds up in the brain. when you give these medications, it can basically disrupt some of the building blocks of those plaques not allowing them to form as well or clearing them after they ve already formed so that s that s basically how these monoclonal antibody drugs work. and again, this might be the second one. what i tell you one interesting thing about this, this trial the ilo liliya suggesting that they follow the amount of amyloid that people have in their brain. and if the amyloid clears they suggest that maybe just stopping the drug it s a monthly infusion. but they say if the amyloid has gone no need to continue taking the drug when you typically think of the drugs, you think of them as lifelong for the rest of your life. maybe not the case here we ll see how the fda weighs in on that the nonna map sounds like sesame street phenomena to me, which is how i ll remember from now on how many people are we talking about that this could benefit hard to remember yeah. so you got about in the country, got about 6 million people who have alzheimer disease carry the diagnosis, but about 1 million who fall into that early stage category. again, keep in mind someone goes in there now developing early symptoms, sometimes hard to diagnose but potentially 1 million people taking the medication, right now. that is the population. will see in the future if some of these medications get approved for people who are further along in their diagnosis while got moderate or severe now so many people take any any promising news when it comes to
