Arctic could be ice-free as early as 2030s, warns new study

Arctic Ocean covers an area of about 14 million square kilometres and is covered by ice for most of the year. September is the month when ice usually reaches its annual minimum. The decline of this ice can be attributed mainly to greenhouse gas emissions, with the other factors – aerosols, solar and volcanic activity – being much less important. The disappearance of ice "will accelerate Arctic warming, which can increase extreme weather events in mid-latitudes," says one of the study's co-authors.
