City College of San Francisco faculty members have agreed to pay cuts averaging 9% next year to save hundreds of instructors from being laid off and their classes from being eliminated.
The one-year contract, ratified by 82% of faculty members voting, will preserve most of the roughly 600 classes that the college had planned to eliminate next academic year as a result of laying off instructors. The prospect of such a loss prompted months of protests by students and faculty in person and online.

Sally Reyes grew up without shoes. She walked with bare feet through rough terrain, mud, and Belize’s hot dirt roads.
She became the first of 15 siblings to graduate from high school and obtain an associate’s degree. That landed a teaching job in Belize, where she taught for 12 years before coming to the United States in 1979. She left an unhealthy relationship and sought a better life for herself, two young daughters, and the baby boy she was expecting.

City College under attack: Students organize to save 600 faculty jobs

On April 11, 2021, over 150 students, activists and people from all over the Bay Area came out to the “March to Save CCSF” in the Mission to protest and call attention to the recently approved layoffs of over 600 professors at City College of San Francisco. Layoffs and budget cuts are, as usual, disproportionately affecting students and faculty of color and the curriculum that best serves them. Here protestors stop at the CCSF Mission Campus to be heard and to call out the inhumanity. – Photo: KZ
