With a health equity lens, University of Toronto researcher leads study focused on diabetes-related vision loss
The University of Toronto’s Aleksandra Stanimirovic is currently leading a study that, she says, underscores the reason she chose to become a health researcher as opposed to a physician.
The project focuses on a screening program for diabetic retinopathy – a complication of diabetes that can lead to blindness – among women from lower socio-economic groups.
She hopes her work will help affected women detect changes in their vision early so they can receive appropriate care.
“I thought as a clinician, my impact is somewhat limited to my patients, whereas with the research I’m doing now, for example, which is focused on policy change, my impact can be further reaching,” says Stanimirovic, now a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) at the Da ....

Senator Raphael Warnock recently toured six Southwest Georgia Farms, his first trip to farm country since taking office.
Senator Warnock says he climbed on farm equipment and dined outside, but mostly listened and got a one-day course on Georgia agriculture from numerous farm stakeholder organizations.
The ag tour allowed a wide array of producers to share information about their crops and voice concerns about issues they face.

President Biden has announced the “American Jobs Plan”, which would revitalize and renew America for the 21
stcentury by creating a cleaner economy, a healthier country, and a more equitable and just society. It would also massively reduce U.S. carbon emissions and build the resilience of our country and our communities to climate change, including through investments in clean energy, modernized infrastructure, and nature-based solutions, all while creating good new jobs and lifting up disadvantaged and underserved communities.
In response, WWF issued the following statement from Alejandro Pérez, senior vice president, policy and government affairs:
“This plan represents the most ambitious investment in American jobs and infrastructure in nearly 50 years. It allows us to reimagine a clean energy-powered economy that also builds healthier communities and a more equitable society. ....
