nbc/wall street journal poll. so in that respect, it could be an outlier. one of the reasons for that when we look at it, even though else is selzer is a great pollster, she's considered the gold standard of polling in iowa, one reason when you look at some of this, that 33% of the respondents were nonwhite. now, normally you usually see about 27 to 28% in a national sample. so you know that, could account for maybe six-point difference or so. it might be a four to six-point lead for the president. so it's probably not 13 points. it's probably something a bit smaller. but you know, still a good pollster, but it may be a slightly narrower margin. >> thank you, domenico for talking about this breaking news. greatly appreciate it. now to egypt where reports on the health of hosni mubarak are complicating a tense situation

what's sometimes seen as bad there. >> i'm not totally surprised either that the white house did eventually invoke executive privilege. if you'd listen to darrell issa over the last couple of weeks, he had said that he didn't go after theity bush administration because it invoked executive privilege seeming to open up the obama administration to making that move eventually. .course, this does carry a little bit of risk for the obama white house because they do risk not looking as transparent as you possibly could. >> well, you know, you say political risk to the white house. michael steele, the former rnc chair was on today and he calculates it as a political risk as well to republicans. let me play what he said. >> the economy is hem ranning. jobs aren't being created at the pace the administration hoped or the american people had hoped and yet here we are in the muck and meier of another congressional investigation to where. it's off message. a number of hill republicans are saying that very quietly. >> domenico, they're saying it

president obama just had the best month of his campaign, raking in more than $60 million in may, a 30% jump over april. he is expected to add 5 million more to his war chest after last night's star-studded lbgt fund-raiser and a money-making breakfast in l.a. happening a little later. let me bring in political editor domenica. >> good morning. >> 60 million bucks, what's behind those numbers. >> if you look at the numbers in april and march are about the same, aside from one thing, which is the big george clooney fund-raiser where that brought in $15 million, the biggest fund-raiser in presidential history. >> where is all this money going, domenico? >> well, we broke down the states where it's all being spent. there's just a ton of money, the lion's share going into ten states but three in particular, virginia, ohio and florida. six out of every $10 being

expenditures. probably topping -- could be close to a billion or so. so far we've seen $108 million just spent on tv and radio and we're only in june. >> unbelievable. nbc's domenico, thank you very much. nevada, by the way, is eighth on the list of states that have seen the most tv ads this year. in just a few hours, president obama is going to make his tenth visit to nevada as president at the university of nevada-las vegas. there he'll be renewing his push for congress to prevent student loans from doubling. let me bring in our old friend, john rolston, las vegas son, publisher and political tv host. good morning. >> good morning. >> so, the president could make the student loan push anywhere he wanted. why unlv? >> maybe then he could get a whole bunch of students in there holding placards at this official event. that's what this is all about. it's building momentum for the

campaign, among various groups, student loans is going to activate the young people that have not been as excited, right, this year as they were in 2008. this is a campaign rally disguised as an official event. >> meantime, we were talking with domenico about the money spent. obama has spent $6 million on tv ads in nevada. how hard is it in a state with, i think, the highest unemployment, right, 11.7%, is it? >> yeah, that's the unemployment rate. that's actually better than it was a few years ago when it was close to 15%. still, we may have the worst economy in the country. this was the boom or bust city i'm sitting in right now, las vegas. the bottom fell out of the housing market. we have the worst foreclosure crisis in the country. the president, you know, won this state by 12 points back in 2008, chris. now all the polls show it dead even. it's a very, very difficult sell. mitt romney has been running here since about 2006. he did well in the state.

more strength there. is it all auto industry? >> a lot auto industry. remember when we talk alto industry we're talking about the totality of that supply chain. >> supply chain. right. >> that's a big point to keep in mind, ohio and the way that affects major regions. >> we've found out who the front-runner is for the vice presidency as far as mitt romney is concerned. second tv ad, let me show it one more time. seep if you caught who it is. here's his ad. >> day one -- president romney announces deficit reductions ending the obama era of big government. helping secure our kids' futures. president romney stands up to china on trade and demands they play by the rules. president romney begins repealing job-killing regulations. >> all right. now let me show you this screen shot domenico. who is this guy? what's going on there? >> i think two shots. >> how about that? >> two shots. >> that is tim paw lenglenty.

domenico, it's our map. for ohio and virginia, more important as a sweep for romney than obama. explain. >> they are. a narrow path for romney if he doesn't get those states because of what's happening in the west. look at colorado, nevada, new mexico. obama's favored in new mexico. >> people have to remember this. new mexico has basically fallen off the battleground map, all these states will bush '04 states. >> and looks like it's trending a little more democratic. nevada, highest unemployment and still for whatever reason it's still a toss-up. >> tracy, are you surprised here we are talking about a scenario where the president either wins florida or ohio and two possible passes with our without, one that includes virginia and one

requested a meeting and it was more of a pep rally from our reporting. it was sort of let's chart a way forward and part of that charting of the path forward is trying to get newt gingrich out of the race and trying to get the texas republican party to change its rules on how it allocates delegates from proportional to winner take all. both of those things are very unlikely to happen. newt gingrich said yesterday he's not getting out and not going to be encouraging his delegates to vote for santorum and while they might be inclined to go and try to change those rules, they need a waiver from the republican national committee and sources inside the rnc tell us that that is not likely to be granted. so this seems like something they're going try to push, but unlikely to happen. >> domenico, great to see you this morning. thank you. you can get the very latest 2012 news from our political unit at firstread.msnbc.com. so apparently what happens in vegas, well, it ends up on youtube.
