Young County makes progress on William P. Johnston Cemetery

The Young County William P. Johnston Preservation Committee recently met with a representative from Texas Tech University about the possibility of making the cemetery a project. The county is waiting on a survey of the property to determine the next step for the project. The committee updated the Young County Commissioners Court in September and voted to close the William P. Johnston Memorial Cemetery for future burials, recruit members for the committee and plan for surveys of the cemetery. ....

Searching for answers: Search for grave turns into local effort to uncover history of county cemetery

Rev. Vanessa Sims’ trip to Graham turned into a journey to find her sister’s grave and led her to question a Young County cemetery and its ownership. Reaching out locally to individuals and entities, Sims helped to push a local collaborative effort for the William P. Johnston Memorial Cemetery. The journey for Sims began when she came to Graham for her father’s funeral. While attending his memorial service Saturday, June 17 at Oasis of Grace Church in Graham, Sims said she thought of her sister and wanted to find her grave and honor her. ....

Parks board approves removal of safety hazards, structures from Firemen's Park

The Graham Parks and Recreation Board this week directed the City Parks Department to continue removal of safety hazards and other structures from Firemen’s Park. Some items which were approved to be removed include the enclosed barbecue pits, "wishing well" and metal heart-shaped bench. The board discussed beginning the removal of safety hazards, dilapidated park equipment and other structures during their meeting Tuesday, Aug. 22. One of the safety concerns was the pump station next to Salt Creek which has a metal building and pipe structure. ....
