reporter: the u.s. embassy in afghanistan is reeling from a coronavirus outbreak that has left 100 people sick and in isolation. at least one person has died of the virus and several people had to be medically evacuated. the rules are very strict, everyone confined to their quarters. officials say those rules remain in place until that chain of transmission is broken. they re urging everyone not to show up at the embassy in kabul unless they have been vaccinated. this comes at a critical time for afghanistan. u.s. troops are withdrawing from that country. at least 50% of military personnel have left so far according to u.s. central command. due to a coronavirus outbreak in the country, the u.s. embassy has suspended visa services. a lot of concern about how this drawdown will continue under these very tough circumstances. coming up, the u.s. justice ....

Not so many years ago we had more than 100,000 troops in the big operation. at the beginning of this year roughly 10,000 nato soldiers and this year zero. but we ll continue but there s a big difference between having some of any number and having zero. absolutely. which is what you re looking at here. it s a continuous drawdown but this is going to be somewhat of a do you think how long do you think until afghanistan maybe does really experience some problems? it seems like more of a when than an if. i m not saying this is an easy decision. there s a lot of uncertainty about the future in afghanistan but as we end our military presence there, we will continue to broaden support with a civilian nato mission to provide assistance to the security institutions. all nato allies continue to provide funding for the security forces. we re also looking into the countertraining and when we arrived two decades ago, there was hardly any afghan security forces at all. we ve helped to ....
