Earth has endured 12 months of temperatures 1.5C hotter than the pre-industrial era for the first time on record, Europe's climate monitor said Thursday, in what scientists called a "warning to humanity".
Climate change intensified heatwaves, droughts and wildfires across the planet, and pushed the global thermometer 1.48 C above the preindustrial benchmark, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported.
In one of the first of several teams of science agencies to calculate how off-the-charts warm 2023 was, the European climate agency Copernicus said the year was 1.48 degrees Celsius (2.66 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times.
The record heat made life miserable and sometimes deadly in Europe, North America, China and many other places last year.
The planet saw a breach in temperature by around two degrees on November 17, making it the warmest November 17 on record. The fluctuation in temperature was just temporary and a concern has risen that the earth was getting hotter and moving towards a climate crisis.
