FREEPORT — After spending the last 16 months not playing in front of a live audience, Bill Petersen directed the Highland Big Band in front of a park filled with people Thursday night in downtown Freeport.
More than 120 people gathered for the first in a series of music events for Music at Debate Square. Some sat in lawn chairs. Some ate ice cream from nearby Union Dairy.
“We got the band together with five people, and as more got vaccinated, the number grew to 15," Petersen said. "It has been more then a year since we played, and I spent much of it listening to music in solitude. So I selected music that reflected a year of solitude building up to jazz to celebrate being back into the community.”

'They are scared to try new things': how is home school impacting young children?

Last modified on Mon 8 Feb 2021 04.50 EST
It is fair to say that Wells, eight, does not enjoy remote learning. “It’s horrible,” he tells a group of fellow year 4 children over a video call. “I can see my friends, but I can’t talk to them.” Emily, nine, finds home schooling tough, too: “It’s really, really boring. I’m sad. But I like being able to play with my guinea pigs.” Flora, also nine, agrees lockdown learning isn’t all bad: “It’s fun solving maths problems with my granny on Skype, and I get to have yummy snacks, like chocolate biscuits, all day.”

How ministers made a shambles of English schools

Last modified on Sun 20 Dec 2020 05.28 EST
After the most tumultuous school year imaginable, Jo Rockall, headteacher of Herschel Grammar School in Slough, had dared to dream that the last day of term, scheduled as a half day, might allow her time to head home and walk the dog. Instead, she is firmly ensconced in her office, attempting to work out the logistics of a detail-light coronavirus testing programme that landed on her desk days before the Christmas holiday. For Rockall and other heads in Slough, who she has been consulting in the past week, it is the latest example of a recurring theme.
