On Saturday afternoon, Aug. 4, 1945, the Cubs and Reds played the middle game of a 3-day, 5-game series at Crosley Field in Cincinnati.
Only 1,377 spectators were on hand to see the Cubs grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, on a single by Don Johnson, a double by Peanuts Lowrey and a 2-out triple by Andy Pafko.
The Reds tallied a run in the second.
The Cubs added a third run in the fourth.
In the fifth, Cubs pitcher Hy Vandenberg gave up a pair of 1-out singles, then a double that drove home both runners. A walk and a double play left the score tied at 3. ....
