The leader of the state agency that helped craft guidelines for operating Oregon’s schools during the pandemic lost his bid for a third term on the Sherwood school board Tuesday.
Oregon Health Authority Director Patrick Allen trailed challenger Duncan Nyang’oro’s 46% to 54% in partial returns repported as of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Those totals are out of nearly 4,700 ballots counted so far by the Washington County elections office in the race for that seat.
Nyang’oro, an auditor for the SAIF Corporation, spent $9,000 to unseat Allen. The incumbent raised about half that amount.

Portland police have identified the man fatally stabbed downtown in late March and arrested another man on suspicion of killing him.
William Aho, 37, was arrested Friday after Portland police said he robbed someone near the west ramp to the Morrison Bridge using a homemade whip the evening before. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center, records show.
Robbery detectives later connected Aho to the fatal stabbing of 40-year-old Jay Hahn, who died shortly after midnight March 31. The robbery and fatal stabbing took place within five blocks of each other, according to police.

Portland school board candidates have brought in nearly $100,000 in donations and more than one quarter of that cash has so far come from one source: the union representing the district’s educators.
With a week to go until Election Day, the Portland Association of Teachers has donated $13,000 each to the campaigns of Herman Greene and Gary Hollands, both of whom the union endorsed, campaign disclosure reports indicate.
Greene’s race, a four-way contest for the Zone 4 position currently held by Rita Moore, is among the most competitive this year.

Oregon governor Kate Brown visited Harvey Scott Elementary School in NE Portland on Thurs., April 1, 2021.
Portland Public Schools will see a boost of about $14 million in its general fund next year. The district also has about $74 million left in federal relief money it can tap.
But its $762 million spending plan will not be enough to mount a full-scale return to classrooms in the fall if the Oregon Department of Education maintains its three-foot distancing rules beyond this school year, Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero told the school board Tuesday.
