The Derek Chauvin trial gave a playbook for prosecuting police — Quartz

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd last week, a relief for generations of Black Americans, who, like myself, had witnessed similar tragedies fall well short of any sort of just, equitable conclusion.
And yet, it seems that reaching the mountaintop has made visible a much larger mountain: turning verdicts like those reached in Chauvin’s case into a regular occurrence for cases of police officers who shoot and often kill Black Americans with impunity. Those who do are overwhelmingly shielded from legal action, and those who are tried rarely see jail time.

The Academy Awards changed several long-standing rules this year, but one tradition has firmly remained intact: the swag bag.
For nearly 20 years, the 25 nominees for best actor, actress, and director receive a commercial cornucopia of products and vouchers for exotic trips and services from brands hoping for some celebrity media exposure. This year, the “Everybody Wins” package, true to pandemic custom, will be delivered to nominees via Postmates.

Distinctive Assets, the Los Angeles-based product placement company that assembles the Oscar gift bags, says that they chose merchandise to evoke themes from the fraught pandemic year. “We did want the bags to feel like they had a bigger purpose than just, ‘here’s a bag full of free stuff,’” explained Lash Fary, the marketing firm’s founder, to Fortune. “All of the bags that we’ve been doing have been from female-owned businesses, Black-owned businesses, disabled entrepreneurs, and companies who give back—even ones that you wouldn’t necessarily think give back.”

New York's street vendors will no longer be supervised by police — Quartz

The era
of New York Police Department (NYPD) officers supervising, arresting, and fining street vendors in New York City is officially over.
On Friday, Jan. 15, the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) officially took over the responsibility of responding to food vending permits, health code violations, and vendor operations from the NYPD.
At-risk demographics
Street vendors are among some of America’s most vulnerable businesspeople, due to their impermanent locations, changing weather conditions, often low annual wages, and multitude of safety risks. Many of the operators in New York are immigrant Hispanic residents who commute from outer boroughs with incomes that have to support multiple people, according to a 2019 survey by the Street Vendor Project. There has also been a cap on the number of vending permits since the 1980s, according to New York Magazine’s Grub Street, resulting in inflated prices on the black market and multi-year waiting lists.
