Learning Action Buffet aims to create racial equity in education


The Learning Action Buffet’s mission is to support youth in creating a sustainable and healthy community through the arts, communication and action. The LAB accomplishes this by integrating meaningful hands-on learning with real-world problem-solving. The LAB has initiated the Creating Equity in Education project to support the Southern New Mexico Equity Forum. As stated in the newly released Education Context Report from the NMSU Center for Community Analysis In Doña Ana County, Hispanic or Latino persons are twice as likely as white non-Hispanics to lack access to the internet or a computer. 
This is just one example of many inequities present in our school system today. Infusing equity into the fabric of the New Mexico educational system will take a concerted effort among all stakeholders, as well as greater awareness about what equity in education looks like and how to achieve it. ....

Commentary: According to data collected by NMSU s Center for Community Analysis (CCA), 41% of households earning less than $20,000 a year are without internet access in the Las Cruces Public School District.  That number only increases when looking at Doña Ana’s surrounding more rural districts.  58% in Gadsden District and 70% in Hatch Valley.  These staggering pre-pandemic numbers convey the historical account of inequitable conditions in our community. 
In the wake of COVID-19, these already astounding disparities have been amplified.  However, so has the opportunity to highlight the urgency to our policymakers and generate the collective voice needed to do something about it. Cost estimates to ensure broadband connectivity statewide are anywhere from two to five billion dollars but, we have the opportunity to ensure at least one billion becomes available to approach this critical need in New Mexico in the up coming legislative session.  ....

LAS CRUCES - According to data collected by NMSU s Center for Community Analysis, 41 percent of households earning less than $20,000 a year are without internet access in the Las Cruces Public School District. That number only increases when looking at Doña Ana’s surrounding more rural districts, according to a news release from the SUCCESS Partnership. In the Gadsden Independent School District, 58% of households in that income bracket lack broadband connectivity; in Hatch Valley Public Schools, it s 70%.  ....
