Letters to the editor: On welcoming diversity Las Cruces Sun-News No hate in Las Cruces Concerning the article “Transgender member booted from Las Cruces organization after requesting they/them pronouns,” I want to commend Michel Wing for their bravery for appearing in an article where their identity is addressed and thank Algernon D’Ammassa for writing this article in an affirming and respectful way. I am disappointed in the response this article received on social media. While some offered comments of support, others displayed their ignorance and hatred towards their neighbor and a member of our community. My disappointment does not stem from the fallacies and untruths contained in these comments, like “they” cannot be singular (an acceptable usage in all major English dictionaries and style guides) or gender is binary (an outmoded thought not accepted in any current medical, biological, or social sciences). Arlette, 18, came to the United State to live with her 27-year-old cousin, Joshua Jiménez. At Centennial High School, where she entered as a senior in August, one of her teachers introduced her to the Project Link Homeless Education Program, Las Cruces Public Schools program to support students experiencing homelessness, after hearing about her living situation. Even with her cousin working all day, the two had little money to spare. They now live in an affordable housing complex in town. For the 2020-21 school year, 566 students in LCPS were considered homeless, which is defined as individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence. Some students share the housing of other persons due to loss of housing or economic hardships; others are living in motels, hotels, trailer parks or camping grounds. ....
