Edwards v. Vannoy rewrites The Supreme Court this morning handed down an opinion in Edwards v. Vannoy, No. 19–5807 (S. Ct. May 17, 2021) (available here), which holds that the Ramos jury-unanimity rule . does not apply retroactively on federal collateral review. Justice Kavanaugh wrote the opinion for the Court, and it starts this way: Last Term in Ramos v. Louisiana, 590 U. S. (2020), this Court held that a state jury must be unanimous to convict a criminal defendant of a serious offense. Ramos repudiated this Court’s 1972 decision in Apodaca v. A woman died in her husband s arms after an ambulance was sent to the wrong location for the third time. Diane Couder passed away in her home, which is only a five minute drive from Logan Hospital in Loganlea, a town half an hour south of Brisbane. Ms Couder s husband Stephen said ambulances from Queensland Health got lost on the way to their house on three separate occasions from December 2020 to February 2021. Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - 1:21 pm EDWARDS Two Norfolk residents were arrested Tuesday after allegedly breaking into a home, assaulting someone and taking a child from the residence, according to state police. Troopers arrested 22-year-old Nelson A. Holmes and 30-year-old Krista Bickford after they reportedly forced entry into a home in Edwards, engaged in a domestic dispute with the residents, assaulted one person, and removed a child. The child was safely located. Holmes was charged with second-degree burglary and was virtually arraigned by the Clifton Town Court. He was released on his own recognizance to appear in the Town of Edwards Court at a later date. ....
