Icy clouds could have kept early Mars warm enough for rivers and lakes, study finds - Vimarsana News

Icy clouds could have kept early Mars warm enough for rivers and lakes, study finds

E-Mail Credit: NASA and JPL-Caltech. One of the great mysteries of modern space science is neatly summed up by the view from NASA's Perseverance, which just landed on Mars: Today it's a desert planet, and yet the rover is sitting right next to an ancient river delta. The apparent contradiction has puzzled scientists for decades, especially because at the same time that Mars had flowing rivers, it was getting less than a third as much sunshine as we enjoy today on Earth. But a new study led by University of Chicago planetary scientist Edwin Kite, an assistant professor of geophysical science...

Icy Clouds Kept Early Mars Warm Enough for Rivers and Lakes

(Credit: NASA and JPL-Caltech) (CN) — The latest of NASA’s rovers to successfully land on Mars has found an advantageous location right next to an ancient river delta, and based on new computer simulations, experts believe the now-barren planet could have had a thin layer of icy clouds at one point, allowing water to flow on the surface. The study was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, where a team of researchers led by University of Chicago planetary scientist ...

Ancient Mars could have had a thin layer of icy clouds that caused

Early in its history Mars may have had a thin layer of icy clouds creating a greenhouse effect that kept conditions warm enough for water to flow, study finds. As seen in images shared by NASA's Perseverance rover, Mars is a dust covered desert planet with no clear signs of life, but the SUV-sized vehicle is currently exploring an area that was once a river delta, formed by flowing water.    At a time when Mars had rivers and lakes the sun was weaker than it is today, with the Red Planet receiving a third as much sunshine as we enjoy on Earth today.

"Could Exist for Billions of Years" --Exoplanets Engulfed by Magma Oceans May Evolve Water-Rich Atmospheres - Vimarsana News

"Could Exist for Billions of Years" --Exoplanets Engulfed by Magma Oceans May Evolve Water-Rich Atmospheres

“Liquid magma is actually quite runny,” said University of Chicago planetary scientist, Edwin Kite, about a new study by University of Chicago and Stanford University researchers suggesting a mechanism where planets could develop atmospheres full of water vapor similar to what makes life on Earth’s surface possible, regulating our climate and sheltering us from damaging cosmic rays. Magma Oceans Suck Hydrogen  Out of the Atmosphere “So it also turns over vigorously, just like oceans on Earth do,” Kite added. “There’s a good chance these magma oceans are sucking hydrogen o...

Hot rocky exoplanets may retain a thick atmosphere full of WATER - Vimarsana News

Hot rocky exoplanets may retain a thick atmosphere full of WATER

Researchers created a model to predict how hot worlds keep their atmosphere  They say that many start with a large 'cloak of hydrogen' but lose it early on This leaves a rocky world underneath that has a cracked and molten surface As the hydrogen is stripped by the star t reacts with the heat to form water which then falls to the ground as water vapour, eventually forming into an atmosphere
