State searches for veterans home site

The Leavenworth County Development Corporation is notifying local city and county officials about a search for the location of a new state veterans home in northeast Kansas.
Steve Jack, executive director of LCDC, mentioned the search Thursday during a meeting of LCDC’s Board of Directors.
Jack said he was contacted by Gregg Burden, director of the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs Office, about the project.
“They’re looking for a 25-to-50-acre site,” Jack said.
Jack said state officials are looking for land that can be donated for a long-term care facility. The facility likely would employ about 125 people.

VA secretary visits Leavenworth

The secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans of Affairs stopped in Leavenworth on Thursday as part of a two-day tour of facilities in Kansas.
“This is a unique opportunity to hear from veterans and providers in a rural state like Kansas about what we can do at the VA to improve outcomes and access for our vets,” Secretary Denis McDonough said. “That’s the whole purpose of this. We’ll take the findings and put those straight to work.”
McDonough spoke while visiting the Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth.
McDonough said focusing on caring for rural veterans is a priority for President Joe Biden and a concern from leadership of the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

County schedules special meeting to address state mask order

Leavenworth County commissioners will have a special meeting Thursday afternoon to consider whether to opt the county out of a new statewide mask mandate.
The meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Leavenworth County Courthouse.
Commissioners have voted in the past to exempt Leavenworth County from the governor’s mask orders.
The governor’s previous executive orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic expire Wednesday as a result of a new state law dealing with emergency management.
Gov. Laura Kelly has announced plans to issue a new executive order Thursday requiring people to wear face coverings in public spaces across Kansas. And commissioners scheduled the special meeting in anticipation of that order.
