With the return of spring weather and the arrival of large-scale vaccinations, we’re finally able to turn our attention to something we haven’t had in a while: live music, in small clubs, outdoor venues and at festivals. There’s a lot of things for venue owners to be optimistic about right now, says Chris Zacher, owner of Denver’s Levitt Pavilion. After a year without shows, the venue is slated to open for the season on May 14. This week, venues across the country can also finally begin applying for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant. The $16 billion federal program will provide relief for music venues that have been closed due to the pandemic. ....
When the owners of iconic jazz club El Chapultepec decided to close the business for good in December, rumors spread about the future of the legendary spot: Would the building be torn down and replaced with a condo complex? Could someone buy the El Chapultepec name and keep the club going? Or would anyone have the moxie to take over the space and create something new? The family of Jerry Krantz, who d run the Pec for decades, decided not to sell the business and just shut it down. But they didn t own its home Evan Makovsky, co-owner of Shames Makovsky Realty Company, bought the building at 1962 Market Street after Krantz died, leasing it back to his family and since the structure is in a historic district, it isn’t going anywhere (though there s plenty of construction next door at the future home of Dierks Bentley s Whiskey Row). ....

For over 2 decades, Drew Morell has been a professional jazz pianist, bassist, guitarist and music educator in the Denver area. One of the true heavy hitters on the Denver jazz scene, Drew has recorded as a sideman on dozens of albums, played in every major jazz festival in Colorado and was the house bassist at the nationally renowned El Chapultapec for three years. Drew is full-time music faculty at the University of Colorado at Denver, and owns/operates his own music studio, Infinity Music in Littleton, Colorado. Paul Musso is an active freelance guitarist and has performed in several diverse jazz, Latin, Gypsy, pop and classical ensembles including: the Colorado Symphony, the Boulder Festival Orchestra and the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra. Paul has performed in venues throughout Europe, Mexico and the United States including the Roulette in Brooklyn, Ronnie Scott’s in London, the Tijuan ....
