Sixteen Indian American students have been selected as finalists in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, a prestigious middle school STEM competition. The finalists were chosen from a pool of 300 Junior Innovators and will compete for over $100,000 in awards, including the top prize of $25,000. ....
Based on the coupling effects of contact electrification and electrostatic induction, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can convert mechanical energy into electric power, which is at the cutting edge of alternative energy technology. Although a considerable number of TENGs with different configurations have been designed, some of them however, which only depend on the electrostatic induction effect have not received enough attention. Here, a non-contact TENG model consists of copper rings and charged dielectric sphere is presented, which is aimed at exploring the working process of TENGs caused by electrostatic induction. Two classical models, including vertical and horizontal double copper rings models are also proposed. Relevant advanced and accurate models of TENGs have been established through the finite element method. We anticipate that the constructed model and theoretical analysis are helpful for the design of non-contact model TENGs with complicated geometric construction, ....
Pi love you! Hand-written maths lessons that Dambusters bouncing bomb inventor Barnes Wallis used to woo his 17-year-old wife who was HALF his age are set to sell for £2,000 The celebrated World War Two hero fell in love with his much younger cousin Molly Bloxham in the 1920s Her father felt it was inappropriate for her senior suitor, almost 20 years older, to be writing to the teenager But he did allow her to correspond provided he taught her mathematics, which she was studying at college Some 250 letters covering calculus, trigonometry and electrostatic induction were written over 16 months Now the archive of Wallis increasingly romantic notes is set to go under the hammer at auction tomorrow ....
