Caffeine puts children at risk for future bone problems

The Daily Jeffersonian
Children who consume caffeinated, sugary beverages or energy drinks can potentially be setting themselves up for bone problems such as an increased number of fractures later in life.
When caffeine, sports drinks or energy drinks replace the drinks children and young adults should be drinking such as water, milk and eight ounces of juice a day, they are put at risk of developing diabetes and suffering bone mineral loss, according to pediatrician Dr. Ellen Kumler.
"When we talk about the American Academy of Pediatrics, they recommend that energy drinks are not good for anybody to drink," Kumler said. "They are never appropriate for children or adolescents."

Doctor shares tips on cold medicine and children

Is a teaspoon really a teaspoon when it comes to giving medicine?
With cold and flu season approaching, parents may find themselves staring at the countless number of over the counter (OTR) cough, cold and flu medicines that line the shelves of their grocery store or pharmacy.
Included with many of those medicines is a variety of ways to measure out the dosage. Some may include a dropper, others may have a measuring cup. One option they don't come with, though, is a teaspoon.
A study published in the Journal of Family Practice shows that almost three-fourths of the 130 adults surveyed use regular teaspoons to measure out doses of medicine.

Outdoor gifts offer children the gift of better physical and mental health

The Daily Jeffersonian
While some parents are scrambling to get their children the hottest new toys and electronic gadgets for Christmas, some may be looking for other gift ideas.
For parents still looking for gifts for their children, Dr. Ellen Kumler, a pediatrician at Southeastern Med, suggests looking for gifts that will encourage them to get outdoors or and engage in active playtime.
"Outside play and active play is one of the most important gifts we can give our kids," Kumler said. "Outside play and active play are so important for development and also for their health."
Kumler suggests looking for toys that not only promote outside but require the child to be active to use them.  Her suggestions include that instead of a Jeep where they just push a pedal and it goes while they steer to consider a tricycle where the child actually has to move their legs to make it go.
