Opinion: Press pause on demolishing U of A's historic Ring Houses

Article content
It has been some two months since the alarm was sounded in the Edmonton Journal’s opinion page concerning the University of Alberta’s planned May demolition of the four remaining Ring Houses.

What is the harm in asking for a year’s delay? None. This would allow these historic homes to be professionally assessed and evaluated for repurposing as was done in 1970 for Rutherford House, at the time up for demolition by the U of A. ....

Tuesday's letters: Most faith communities act for greater good

Article content
Recent actions of some individuals in the religious community are not reflective of the response of religious leaders and adherents throughout Alberta. Faith leaders have diligently utilized the COVID-related health measures of Alberta Health Services to protect the safety of their local communities. In town hall calls with Premier Kenney and Dr. Deena Hinshaw, there is always an affirmation that faith communities are vital, which is why we have enjoyed freedom to gather.
Compared to the other provinces, Alberta had minimal restrictions on houses of worship from May-Nov. 2020. Only recently have those increased. Temples, churches, mosques, and synagogues in Alberta remain open up to 15 per cent of fire-code capacity, providing physical distance, masking and sanitization is in place. Many faith communities are hosting multiple services or drive-in services and facilitating programs within these guidelines. Faith leaders pivoted online to host worship service ....
