EMERGING MARKETS-Oil gains push rouble past Ukraine tensions; stocks rise

BlackRock optimistic on EM in 2021
April 20 (Reuters) - Russia’s rouble was supported by stronger oil prices on Tuesday, but gains were limited as tensions with Ukraine ramped up, while emerging market stocks rose on improving sentiment over a global economic recovery.
The rouble added about 0.2% as oil prices rose on the prospect of improving global demand. But the currency has marked volatile sessions after the United States imposed sanctions on Russia last week.
Tensions escalated on Monday after Moscow was said to have assembled more than 100,000 troops on Ukraine’s border. An ongoing row with the Czech Republic also has the potential to dampen sentiment over Russian financial markets. ....

MSCI EM FX index set for best week in 4 months
April 16 (Reuters) - Russia’s rouble rebounded on Friday after steep losses on fresh sanctions from the United States, while Turkey’s lira fell sharply after investors saw the new central bank governor as striking a dovish tone.
The rouble jumped 1.2% on Friday, with Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan both forecasting a bigger interest rate hike by the central bank, following U.S. sanctions on the country’s debt market.
The rouble had tumbled nearly 1% on Thursday after Washington announced sanctions on Russia over alleged election interference and malicious cyber activity. Russian bonds were also stable after settling higher at the end of a volatile session on Thursday. ....

LONDON (Reuters) - Emerging market central banks delivered five net interest rate hikes in March, marking the end of an easing cycle which started in 2019 as central banks in the developing world grapple with rising inflation pressures.
Across a group of 37 central banks in developing economies, policy makers in Ukraine, Georgia, Brazil, Turkey and Russia raised interest rates, many delivering bigger hikes than expected. This follows a total of two net interest rate cuts in February.

Turkish c.bank holds rates, but doesn’t signal tight policy (Adds details on Turkish c.bank decision)
April 15 (Reuters) - Turkey’s lira fell on Thursday after the central bank held rates but shied away from reaffirming a pledge to tighten policy, while Russia’s rouble plummeted after Washington announced new sanctions on the country.
The lira shed 0.7% after the central bank held rates steady at 19%, but dropped a pledge to tighten policy further as needed.
It was the first monetary policy decision since President Tayyip Erdogan last month replaced hawkish governor Naci Agbal with Sahap Kavcioglu, who shares Erdogan’s unorthodox view that high interest rates cause inflation, sparking a market selloff. ....
