MOGADISHU, May 6 (Reuters) - Somalia said on Thursday it was restoring diplomatic ties with neighbouring Kenya after it severed relations in December, accusing Nairobi of meddling in politics.
Relations between the countries have also been tense over the ownership of potential oil and gas deposits, some of which lie off the coast of Jubbaland, one of Somalia's five semi-autonomous states.
"Now diplomatic relations are restored," Abdirahman Yusuf, deputy information minister, told a news conference in Mogadishu, saying Qatar had helped in the process.
There was no immediate comment from the Kenyan government, though State House in Nairobi tweeted on Thursday afternoon that President Uhuru Kenyatta "received a special message" from Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar that was delivered by Qatar's special envoy of the foreign minister.

MOGADISHU, May 6 (Reuters) - Somalia said on Thursday it was restoring diplomatic relations with neighbouring Kenya almost six months after severing ties, accusing Nairobi of meddling in politics.
Relations between the countries have also been tense over the ownership of potential oil and gas deposits, some of which lie off the coast of Jubbaland, one of Somalia's five semi-autonomous states.
"Now diplomatic relations are restored," deputy information minister Abdirahman Yusuf told a news conference in Mogadishu, saying the Gulf Arab state of Qatar had helped in the process.

DOHA: Saudi Arabia’s top diplomat has met Qatari ruler Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani in Doha on Monday, official media reported, as the two countries have started to heal the recent rift.
Prince Faisal bin Farhan’s visit came as a Qatari delegation has arrived in Cairo to attempt restoring diplomatic ties between Egypt and the Gulf monarchy fractured by years of discord, the Egyptian media reported. Saudi Arabia led a coalition of the countries, including Egypt to break off ties with Qatar in June 2017 over the claims that it was too close to Iran that backed the radical Islamist groups, which Qatar has always denied. But following Kuwaiti mediation, Qatar was invited to a regional meeting in Saudi Arabia in January at which Qatar was brought back into the regional fold and a process of reconciliation began.

On 30 January, Pakistan's Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa paid a two-day visit to Qatar where he met with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, along with other military officials. General Bajwa and Al-Thani reportedly discussed issues related to defence, security and regional geopolitical issues. The visit came a few weeks after Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states announced a restoration in diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar, following an over three-year embargo.
Pakistani analysts state that General Bajwa's recent visit had been in the pipeline for some time, however, it had been stalled in light of the Qatar-Gulf crisis. Prime Minister Imran Khan is also expected to visit Qatar – his fourth visit as prime minister – in the coming days. The visit to Qatar comes after a tense year in Pakistan-Gulf ties, including a souring of relations with Pakistan's leading partner in the region, Saudi Arabia. Some academics have speculated that Pakistan is concerned with a reduced role in the Gulf security architecture, heightening the importance and direction of this visit.
