On April 26, a group of mothers gathered in Chicago, Illinois to hold a vigil for families who have lost loved ones to police violence in the city. These women — including Dorothy Holmes, the mother of Ronald Johnson, who was shot and killed by Chicago Police in 2014 — demanded police accountability. The women pointed out the string of violations by the Chicago Police Department and called to defund the police.

Lawmakers push police reform plans
Police officers who were either fired or forced to resign because of disciplinary reasons may not be able to work as officers in other jurisdictions in the state of New York should a bill announced Saturday become law.
"If you have the power and the privilege to enforce the law, you must be held to a higher standard," New York State Senator Brian Benjamin, who is sponsoring the proposed bill, told CBS News. "That standard has to include making sure that cops know that they can't just do whatever they want to do."

New York Bill Would Stop Fired Cops From Being Rehired Elsewhere

"If you have the power and the privilege to enforce the law, you must be held to a higher standard," Benjamin told the outlet.
On Saturday, Speaker Corey Johnson, Council Member Francisco Moya, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams at the National Action Network headquarters in Harlem, according to News 4 New York.
The legislation to be filed by Benjamin would stop officers who resigned or were fired over accusations of misconduct from being hired in New York, even if they worked out of state.
Johnson said there is a need to stop "wandering officers," who are twice as likely to commit physical or sexual misconduct, from finding their way into the NYPD.

Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and police brutality dominated legislative sessions in 2020, leading to scores of laws that will take effect in the new year.
Virus-related laws include those offering help to essential workers, boosting unemployment benefits and requiring time off for sick employees. A resolution in Alabama formally encouraged fist-bumping over handshakes.
Legislatures also addressed police use of force against Black people and other people of color after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis led to widespread protests against police brutality. New laws will mandate oversight and reporting, create civilian review panels and require more disclosures about problem officers.

While legislatures tackled some elements of the coronavirus outbreak this year, most sessions had ended before the current wave of cases, deaths and renewed stay-at-home orders. Lawmakers of both major parties have vowed to make the pandemic response a centerpiece of their 2021 sessions, addressing issues ranging from school reopenings to governors' emergency powers.
