Lloyd Newman became well known by age 13 after he and a childhood friend examined life on the South Side and in a public housing development for the radio documentary “Ghetto Life 101.” After battling sickle cell anemia throughout his life, Newman died at 43.
He was well known for the radio documentary “Ghetto Life 101” that he, LeAlan Jones and David Isay produced. He later was framed by corrupt Chicago cop Ronald Watts for drug possession, then exonerated.
Lloyd Newman, who teamed up with a fellow teenager in the 1990s to record two award-winning radio documentaries that bared the pernicious underside of growing up in a Chicago public housing project, died Dec. 7 in Elmhurst, Illinois. He was 43.
He and LeAlan Jones recorded stories of life and death in a Chicago housing project for NPR, winning a Peabody Award and inspiring the birth of StoryCorps.
