Technology provides procedure efficiencies for congenital heart disease patients

E-Mail WASHINGTON, D.C, (April 30, 2021) - An analysis of a new international registry reveals benefits of using a longer covered stent for interventional procedures in congenital heart disease patients with Sinus Venosus Atrial Septal Defect (SVASD). The study was presented today as late-breaking clinical research at the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) 2021 Scientific Sessions. SVASD is a rare adult congenital heart disease which permits shunting of blood from the systemic to the pulmonary circulation , causing excessive blood flow to the lungs. Until now, open heart surgical repair was the gold standard approach to dealing with this condition but is necessarily invasive. Covered stent implantation is a recently developed interventional procedure that can replace open heart surgery in some of these patients. However, according to the study authors, there is no ideal stent often leaving physicians to modify existing stents and frequently needing t

Memorial Pool in Weston may get a facelift

Wicked Local The Select Board unanimously voted to support spending $250,000 from the town s Community Preservation Act account for design fees on future possible improvements to Memorial Pool. Residents at Town Meeting, which starts May 15, will have the final vote on whether to approve the design funds. Recreation Commission Chairman Eric Rosenthal told the Select Board on April 13 that the pool has been a popular gathering place since the 1970s, with few renovations over the years. Nearly a quarter of the town s residents use the pool each season. The project is being driven by the need to replace the pool s filtration system, which alone will cost about $500,000 to $750,000. The filtration system will need to be replaced after 30 years of usage by the time the pool renovations could be completed in the summer of 2023, according to Recreation Director Chris Fitzgerald.

Fitch slashes U S high-yield default forecast | Investment Executive

James Langton Amid a robust economic recovery and strong financial market conditions, Fitch Ratings has dropped its forecast for defaults in the U.S. high-yield market. The rating agency now expects the U.S. high-yield default rate to finish the year at 2%, down from its previous forecast of 3.5%. “Enhanced liquidity and low near-term maturities due to favorable capital market access and government stimulus lowers the default risk for many companies that experienced sharply reduced cash flows during the pandemic,” said Eric Rosenthal, senior director of leveraged finance at Fitch, in a release. “Operating conditions are also starting to improve due to the ramp-up in coronavirus vaccinations and the easing of restrictions,” he added.

The haunted Karoo: All is quiet after dark … or is it

There are all sorts of reasons for not being on a lonely Karoo road after dusk. Huge cross-country trucks with sleepy eyes behind the wheel suddenly appear in your lane. A little bakoorjakkals (bat-eared fox) becomes roadkill in your headlights. A midwinter kudu smashes into your windscreen with disastrous results all round. Or a ghost appears out of the inky blackness and then what? I tend to roam the Karoo by day and park indoors at night, which is probably why I’ve never really seen a spectre while sober. But, simply judging by legend, one knows they’re out there.
