Environment Southland rates to rise by 20 per cent

The council heard at a hearings meeting last week that there had not been a clear mandate from submitters about which rates increase was favourable. Chairman Nicol Horrell said he thought there would be more submissions that would say no to a 20 per cent rates rise, and he favoured the higher option, calling it ‘’a reset”. It had been a difficult long-term plan, and it was time for leadership, he said. Baird raised the issue that some submissions, such as those from Federated Farmers and Forest and Bird, were made on behalf of a group of submitters, and not just one person.
