School officials consider changes to planned renovations due to budget shortfall

Keith Vandervort
ELY – With numerous questions and feedback in hand, and a recent plea for major adjustments, ISD 696 school board members gathered at a study session Monday night to ponder their next moves for a $20 million building project that is more than $4 million over budget.
Following a special study session with district principals and a building facilities committee meeting last week, board members met with the project architect and construction managers to work through the mounting challenges of providing a modern educational facility for the Ely community.
More than $12 million in construction bids, mainly for the campus’s new building, were approved earlier this spring. A second bid package, primarily for the renovation and modernization of the district’s existing Memorial and Washington buildings, was budgeted at about $4 million but came in at $8 million. The bids of the second construction package were rejected last month and officials hope to rebid that project scope at a smaller scale later this year.

Ely school project hit with rising costs

ELY –No turning back now. Demolition of the Ely school Industrial Arts building started Monday afternoon as the $20 million facility renovation project moves forward for ISD 696.
School board members gathered a couple of hours later and were briefed on how they hope to proceed with a project that was bid millions of dollars over budget.
District leaders formally rejected the entire second phase construction bid package that came in last month at more than $8 million, twice the amount that was estimated.
School officials and project managers are now facing the prospect of working through possible major reductions of as much as $ 4 million in renovating the existing school campus buildings when they re-bid that portion of the project later this fall.

Ely students will be learning to learn during building project

Keith Vandervort
ELY – As the ISD 696 school community plans for the completion of a major construction project on the school campus over the next 18 months or so, disruptions and dust will likely be the new normal as builders demolish unused structures, work to link two existing school buildings, and renovate landmark facilities.
The $20 million project should be completed in time for the start of the 2022-23 school year, but staff and students are already getting a taste of the temporary re-locations, classroom shuffling and learning materials storage challenges necessary for the renovation of the 100-year-old buildings.
School board members were updated on the project during a study session Monday night and were asked to consider, among other things, approving an end-of-the-school year schedule change for the K-5 students in the Washington building to make room for construction crews.

ELY – A public bid opening last Thursday for the first phase of a multi-year building and facility renovation project for the Ely school district gave construction managers and district officials an idea of the real-world cost expectations, estimated to cost about $20 million.
Project construction manager Kraus-Anderson Construction Co. hosted the bid opening in the Washington School auditorium. Just a couple of contractors, a representative from Architectural Resources, Inc., two ISD 696 staff members, a school board member, and a member of the local media witnessed the arduous task of opening and tabulating the sealed bids on more than 30 work scopes.

ELY - Ely school district administrators late Wednesday extended distance learning for all students in grades 6-12 until Monday, April 12.
‘We expected to have the Memorial students return on Tuesday, April 6, dependent on evidence that the spread of COVID-19 in our school community had subsided,” said ISD 696 Superintendent Erik Erie. “This decision was made to help stem the spread of COVID-19 that is still with us.”
Ely students in grades K-12 remain in distance learning until at least Monday, April 12.
Another case reported on Wednesday, after the Timberjay’s print edition deadline, increased the number of reported COVID-19 cases to 28 in the schools between March 15 and March 31.

ELY – The construction timeline for the ISD 696 building project calls for the Industrial Arts building to be emptied of the preschool, tech students, learning materials and machinery within a matter of weeks.
Superintendent Erik Erie told school board members Monday night that recent meetings and walk-through tours with the project architects and construction managers revealed the challenges ahead for school administrators.
