Mackenzie Dern hopes historic matchup with Nina Nunes on ABC can grow, inspire female UFC audience

Mackenzie Dern and Nina Nunes will break down another wall for women’s MMA this Saturday.
The strawweight matchup takes place on the main card of UFC Vegas 23 at the APEX, and will also serve as the first women’s UFC bout to air on ABC television. Saturday’s event will be the second to air on ABC following UFC Fight Island 7 in January.
For Dern, who is looking to build upon an impressive 3-0 campaign in 2020, she is hoping the placement on the card and network will help grow, as well as inspire, the female audience of the UFC. In addition, she’s honored to take on a fellow mother in Nunes.

Bellator 256 predictions & preview for 'Bader vs Machida 2'

Card image cap

Bellator MMA’s new relationship with Showtime continues with another Friday night that’s alright for fighting. Just as we did last week, we’re headlining with a rematch, although this one is almost nine years in the making. At UFC on FOX 4 in Los Angeles, Calif., Lyoto Machida knocked out Ryan Bader in the second round at a point in his career where Bader says he, “knew nothing about striking.” Now, he’s eager to find out how much he’s improved over the last decade by running this fight back a second time.
At age 37, there’s no doubt that Bader has developed from a collegiate wrestling stud to a full-fledged striker, grappler and submission arts practitioner in the intervening years. Even so, “Darth” can’t allow himself to take “The Dragon” lightly. It’s true that Machida lost each of his last two fights, but if you’re losing to both Phil Davis and Gegard Mousasi by split decision, those losses are at least partial victories. In neither case did Machida get finished and in both cases he made it hard for the judges to choose a winner.

Norma Dumont misses weight again, UFC Vegas 23 fight vs. Erin Blanchfield cancelled

Card image cap

Bantamweight is clearly not for Norma Dumont.
The Brazilian badly missed weight for the second time in a row, except this time she’s gotten her fight cancelled. As she did for her November win versus Ashlee Evans-Smith, Dumont weighed in at 139.5 lbs against Erin Blanchfield.
UFC officials confirmed at Friday’s weigh-in that “due to weight management issues,” Dumont has been pulled from the Blanchfield matchup. Blanchfield made weight and ideally she gets compensated even though she won’t be competing tomorrow afternoon.
Dumont debuted in the UFC at featherweight against Megan Anderson in February of last year, losing by first-round KO. Obviously, the subsequent attempts to go to bantamweight have gone poorly and it leaves her spot on the roster in a precarious position due to not being able to make 135 and the paucity of fighters at 145.

Students could return to school on April 12
Keith Vandervort
ELY - The Ely school district administrative team late last week extended distance learning for all students in grades 6-12 until Monday, April 12, due to the continued spiking of positive coronavirus cases.
‘We expected to have the Memorial students return on April 6, dependent on evidence that the spread of COVID-19 in our school community had subsided,” said ISD 696 Superintendent Erik Erie. “This decision was made to help stem the spread of COVID-19 that is still with us.”
Ely students in grades K-12 remain in distance learning until at least Monday, April 12.

Cris Cyborg: Focus is '100 percent' on Leslie Smith for rematch after catchweight concerns in first fight

Cris Cyborg thinks there are several reasons why her second fight with Leslie Smith could look different from the first.
During Friday’s Bellator 255 broadcast, it was announced that Cyborg’s next featherweight title defense will be a rematch against Smith set to headline Bellator 259 on May 21 Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Cyborg defeated Smith by first-round TKO when they fought at UFC 198 five years ago.
Speaking to the media at Bellator 259, Cyborg explained that she feels both her and Smith are better fighters now and that she expects to put on an even stronger performance this time around. Their first meeting was a 140-pound catchweight affair as Cyborg was attempting to move down to the bantawmeight division, a plan that was eventually abandoned due to the difficulty of the weight cuts.

MMA Hot List -- No surprise at No. 1, but who joins UFC champ Francis Ngannou in the Top 10?

UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou captured the imagination -- as well as the most prestigious prize -- of the combat sports world when he dethroned Stipe Miocic at UFC 260 on Saturday.
So it was no surprise that ESPN's panel made Ngannou its overwhelming choice for the top spot of its latest Hot List.
The list recognizes achievements over the past three months, a time span that featured two new champions -- including bantamweight Aljamain Sterling, who became the first person to win a UFC belt by disqualification when Petr Yan landed an illegal knee -- and several knockout-of-the-year candidates. Success, controversy and flash conspired to make this one of the more intriguing periods in UFC history.

Finding The Perfect Coffee Place For Students
Written by Branden Townes on March 28, 2021
Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks are the top contenders for college students. When students need coffee, refresher, or tea they will take a trip to these locations.
“I worked at Dunkin Donuts a couple of years ago,” Barr said. “They have good coffee products, better than Starbucks but I don’t like going anymore because I used to work there.”
Dunkin Donuts sells more than just coffee, refreshers, and teas. They also sell sandwiches, bagels, wraps and donuts. Starbucks has the same variety of items on its menu as well. In comparison to Dunkin, Starbucks has more options of other products on their menu with many bakery items, sandwiches, oatmeal, and yogurt.

Dana White says he is 'thinking about doing Amanda Nunes and Julianna Peña' next

Dana White says he is ‘thinking about doing Amanda Nunes and Julianna Peña’ next

The title shot campaign of Julianna Peña is gaining steam as UFC president Dana White confirms he is seriously considering her as the next opponent for dual women’s champion, Amanda Nunes.
Peña has continued to apply pressure to the UFC brass about getting the fight with Nunes, beginning with her post-fight comments after submitting Sara McMann at UFC 257. She paid close attention to Nunes’ most recent title defense — which saw the champion dominate women’s featherweight contender Megan Anderson at UFC 259 — and then started asking for her return to the women’s bantamweight division.

Dana White: "I'm thinking about doing Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes"

Card image cap

UFC president Dana White confirmed that he is thinking about booking UFC women’s bantamweight championship Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Pena.
Nunes is coming off of a quick submission win over Megan Anderson at UFC 259 in a 145lbs title defense, and the promotion is looking to turn her back around quickly in a 135lbs title fight. The one fighter in the women’s bantamweight division who has been the most vocal about getting the fight with Nunes is Pena, the former “The Ultimate Fighter” winner. Pena is coming off of a submission win over Sara McMann and she believes that win should be enough to get her the title shot in what is a shallow division in terms of fresh contenders.

Sean O'Malley on Casey Kenney-Megan Anderson comments: 'You can't let someone else's words effect how you feel emotionally'

Ahead of Casey Kenney’s last fight with Dominick Cruz, he made some controversial remarks about Megan Anderson on Sean O’Malley’s podcast.
Getting ready to get back in action himself this weekend at UFC 260, O’Malley briefly reflected on the incident that happened on his show.
Sean O'Malley on the Megan Anderson situation.
“I didn’t say anything bad, did I?” O’Malley responded when asked if he regretted the situation. “You can’t let someone else’s words affect how you feel emotionally if you said something about me… I don’t know, it’s just, I don’t know. She’s not a co-worker anymore so it is what it is.”

UFC bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley has spoken out for the first time since Casey Kenney made sexual and insensitive remarks about Megan Anderson during an appearance on his podcast.
During a January episode of “The Timbo Sugarshow”, Kenney was asked by O’Malley’s coach, Tim Welch, if he would “smash” Megan Anderson.
“Probably not, man,” Kenney replied while laughing. “She’s not too … well, I mean, if it came down to it, and it was like 5 a.m., 4, she’s a 5 a.m.-er, 4 a.m.-er. Just us two hanging out, like, ‘F*ck it, let’s do it.’”

Sean O'Malley Claims Megan Anderson Shouldn't Be Offended By Casey Kenney's Comments

Casey Kenney was recently under fire for his recent comments about Megan Anderson on Sean O’Malley’s podcast, but “Suga” doesn’t think Anderson should be offended.
On the podcast, O’Malley’s coach, Tim Welch, asked Kenney if he would sleep with Anderson, in which Kenney said only if he was hammered and it was at four in the morning. The former featherweight title challenger, of course, did not take kindly to those comments.
I guess MMA is a line of work where you can publicly talk about whether you'd have sex with a coworker in an utterly degrading way and face zero consequences.

Fallout from UFC 259: What's next for those involved?

Card image cap

Another UFC pay-per-view is in the books, and as always, there is plenty to unpack. UFC 259 had it all, from submissions to knockouts and even disqualifications. With three title fights to wrap up the 15-fight day we expected to see fireworks at UFC 259, but I am sure no one expected this card-of-the year-contender to play out the way it did.
The first of three title fights seemed to be the talk of the card following the controversial finish. The Bantamweight champion at night’s end was not the same guy who walked in with the belt.
Petr Yan, who defeated Jose Aldo last July to claim the vacated title, was stellar in his first title defense against rising star Aljamain Sterling. Sterling pushed the pace for the nearly four rounds this fight took to resolve. Sterling, however, seemed to gas out as the fight continued, ultimately resulting in what was the final blow of Yan’s first championship run. As Sterling gathered himself from the ground, Yan struck him in the head with a powerful knee, resulting in a pause in the fight and the ultimate decision from referee Mark Smith to deem Yan disqualified for an illegal strike.

Cat Zingano, Liz Carmouche Set To Make Returns At Bellator 256
Mar 23, 2021
When Bellator launches on Showtime, it will do so with a couple of former UFC title challengers in Cat Zingano and Liz Carmouche.
The card will mark the sophomore appearances for both fighters after a pair of successful debuts.
Zingano entered the Bellator cage for the first time last September opposite Gabby Holloway. It was her first fight since December 2018 after being released by the UFC following a TKO loss to Megan Anderson that capped a 1-4 stretch. Zingano looked in fine form in her return, dominating Holloway on the way to a unanimous decision. In her next outing, she will face Olivia Parker. After starting her career 4-0, Parker made her Invicta debut in July 2020, losing by submission in 65 seconds.

Video has been released of the police officer-involved shooting on Jan. 6.
A cop fired five shots at a fleeing stolen van — wounding a suspected car thief — during a dramatic Brooklyn clash caught on responding officers’ body worn cameras, officials said Saturday.
Two other officers were ordering Reed out of the van, striking its door with their batons, when he revved the engine and charged out of the parking spot, body worn camera footage released by the NYPD shows.

UFC 225: Prelim Fights that May Surprise
It’s fight week! UFC 225 is finally here, and on paper it looks to be one of the best collections of fights the combat-sports leader has offered up in some time.
With two championship bouts sitting atop the card, and what is essentially a title eliminator between Holly Holm and Megan Anderson, the UFC has pulled out all the stops for its first pay-per-view event in Chicago.
There has been a ton of hype over the event’s main card, and rightfully so. However, it’s going to be a couple of preliminary-card fights that steal the show.

COVID Cases Force Ely's 6-12th Graders Back To Distance Learning

The change starts March 19 for junior high and high school students, grades 6-12.
This comes after seven positive cases popped up in the past three days.
In-person learning will return April 6.
School officials say the time away will act as a quarantine period to help stop the spread of the virus.
Below is the full letter to parents:
Dear Ely Memorial Families,
As you know, we are experiencing another surge of COVID cases in our community. Exactly one year ago today, we announced that we would close our doors to move to a Distance Learning model, starting March 19th. This week, we have seen a rise, and have had four more positive cases reported today in the Memorial Building. This is a total of seven in the past 3 days. In conjunction with the COVID spread we are seeing in the Ely Community, the St. The Louis County Health Department has advised us to do a “reset” where we go to Distance Learning for all students in grades 6-12. The intent is to have families quarantine to help stop the spread of the virus.
