JBC extends to Feb. 26 applications, nominations for Chief Justice post

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has extended to Feb. 26 the deadline for the applications or nominations to the post of Chief Justice which would be vacant on March 27 with the early retirement of Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta.

Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra, an ex-officio JBC member, said the submission online or physical of the documentary requirements for those who applied or who were nominated would have to be completed on or before Feb. 26.
It was not known why the original Feb. 15 deadline was extended.
Under the rules, the five most senior SC justices are automatically nominated to the post of Chief Justice.  However, once nominated they have to accept their nominations. ....

SC re-affirms right of employers to dismiss workers on redundancy

It said “… an employer has no legal obligation to keep more employees than are necessary for the operation of its business.”
 
It pointed out: “In fact, even if a business is doing well, an employer can still validly dismiss an employee from the service due to redundancy if that employee’s position has already become in excess of what the employer’s enterprise requires.”
 
The latest SC ruling on the redundancy issue was contained in the case that settled the legal controversy between 3M Philippines, Inc. and Lauro D. Yuseco, who before the termination of his employment on Jan. 1, 2016, was the country business leader of the firm’s industrial business group. ....
