Koljonen shocks Gemke to reach semis at European Badminton Championships

World number 80 Kalle Koljonen stunned third seed Rasmus Gemke in straight games to secure his place in the semi-finals of the European Badminton Championships in Ukrainian capital Kiev.
The 27-year-old Finnish player defeated French seventh seed Toma Junior Popov in the previous round and backed up that victory with a 21-15 21-19 win over Denmark’s world number 12 Gemke.
Koljonen will next face Danish top seed and defending champion Viktor Axelsen who has yet to drop a game as he defeated French eighth seed Thomas Rouxel 21-14 21-15 in the quarter-finals.

The European Badminton Championships continues for the Magee family in the Ukraine today.
Sam and Chloe Magee who are the 7th seeds in the competition won their opening mixed doubles match over three sets.
Against Dutch pairing, Ties Van Der Lecq and Debora Jille, The Raphoe siblings won the first 21-14, lost the second 21-19 but battled back to win the third 21-14 and move into the last 16.
Sam and Chloe won bronze at the European Championships previously and they know a solid performance in Kiev will help with their target of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics.
Rachel Darragh was also one of the first on court this morning but unfortunately Rachel and her mixed doubles partner Paul Reynolds lost their last 32 round match in two sets.

Denmark's Eipe out of European Badminton Championships with COVID-19

Danish men's doubles player Joel Eipe has tested positive for COVID-19 and been ruled out of the European Badminton Championships in Kiev in Ukraine.
Eipe and doubles partner Rasmus Kjær have been withdrawn from the competition as a result, but was the only person to return a positive test among more than 370 conducted ahead of the tournament, Badminton Europe said.
The 24-year-old tested positive upon arrival at the competition hotel, with a second positive result confirming he has COVID-19.
Eipe must now go through a 13-day isolation period in his hotel room, in line with the tournament protocol.
