Double diving gold headlines hectic weekend for British athletes

Daley and Lee finished 48 points clear of Mexico’s Randal Willars Valdez and Ivan Garcia Navarro in a score that would have won silver at the 2019 World Championships.
It was Daley’s 33rd career gold medal and his first at the World Cup, having won bronze in Beijing in 2008 and Rio in 2016 in the lead-up to his first and third Games.
Team GB will be represented in every diving discipline for the fourth successive Games as quota places were wrapped up in women’s 3m springboard and 10m platform.
Lois Toulson and Eden Cheng took overall silver behind Canada to secure an Olympic place for their nation, producing the best dive in the field in the third round having sat seventh.

Axelsen tests positive for COVID, forfeits European badminton final

May 3, 2021
COPENHAGEN (AFP) – Badminton world number two Viktor Axelsen was forced to withdraw from yesterday’s final of the European Championship in Kiev after testing positive for COVID-19.
Axelsen was to face fellow Dane Anders Antonsen, who claimed his first European title with a walkover.
“Top seed and defending champion Viktor Axelsen returned a second positive test for COVID-19, ruling him out of contesting the men’s singles final of the 2021 European Championships today,” Badminton Denmark announced yesterday.
It said the 27-year-old Axelsen returned a first positive test after beating Finn Kalle Koljonen in the semi-finals on Saturday and must isolate in Kiev.

Two finals at European Badminton Championships cancelled due to COVID-19 cases

Sunday, 2 May 2021
The men’s singles and men's doubles finals have been cancelled following the confirmation of three COVID-19 cases at the European Badminton Championships in Ukrainian capital Kiev.
Top seed and defending men’s singles champion Viktor Axelsen tested positive for coronavirus, dashing hopes of a mouth-watering all-Danish final against second seed Anders Antonsen today.
German doubles player Mark Lamsfuss and an umpire have also been forced to isolate in their hotel rooms after returning positive tests.
Badminton Europe said Isabel Herttrich and Marvin Seidel, who partnered Lamsfuss in mixed doubles and men’s doubles respectively, have joined the infected trio in isolation after being considered as close contacts.
