Last week's attention-grabbing sports event was hosted by Hungarian capital city Budapest. At the recently-held European Wrestling Championship, Romania sent in a strong delegation, mostly made of young wrestlers. The record did meet the expectations, as the Romanians walked home with four medals, of which pride of place holds the gold medal won in the women's version of the competition by Andreea Ana, in the 55-kilogram category. Reason enough for Radio Romania International to designate Andreea Ana the Athlete of the week.

Andreea Ana's trail at the European championships was indeed blazing; in the quarterfinals, Andreea overpowered Germany's Anastasia Blayvas, 4-nil. Then in the semifinals, Ana defeated Mariana Drăguţan of the Republic of Moldova, 6-nil. Andreea Ana's confrontation in the final was literally dramatic, since the Romanian grabbed a hard-fought 7-5 win against Ukrainian challenger Oleksandra Khomenets. Ana ....

Tenishia Thornton Breaks 2 Commonwealth Youth Records As Yazmin Zammit Stevens Breaks 2 National Records r

The Malta Weightlifting team – made from Tenishia Thornton and Yazmin Zammit Stevens with Jesmond Caruana as team leader – have recently represented Malta in the European Senior Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Given that this was the last chance for senior athletes to qualify for the Olympic Games, this was a high-level competition for the two. Tenishia Thornton, the youngest athlete in the competition at 15, competed in the 49kg category and finished with 70kg in the Snatch and 89kg in the clean and jerk.

Her 89kg Clean and Jerk was a 5kg improvement on her previous best, breaking a total of 5 national records with all her Clean and Jerk attempts at 85kg, 87kg, and 89kg – with her two totals at 157kg and 159kg. ....
