HUNTINGTON – The manufacturer of an abortion pill has sued to overturn West Virginia’s ban on abortion, saying it restricts access to a drug approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

Walgreens' parent company is the first major national pharmacy chain to say it will sell the abortion pill under the new rules laid out by the Food and Drug Administration.
Retail pharmacies are now permitted to dispense mifepristone, the first of two drugs used to complete a medication abortion, to people who have a prescription from a certified health care provider. A regulatory change made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows retail chains, like CVS and Walgreens, and independent drugstores to fill prescriptions for the drug. Previously, only clinics, doctors and some mail-order pharmacies could provide mifepristone.
Those seeking to terminate an early pregnancy will be able to obtain abortion pills at certain pharmacies and through the mail.
