Expected goals. It's a term we throw around all the time that is meant to be proxy for "shot quality" or, more explicitly, a description of how likely any shot is going to become a goal and thus how many goals a team was "expected" to score. At its core, any expected goals measure is simply a probability measure of a puck getting into the net, and that is a better predictor of goal scoring (and thus game winning!) than looking at just overall shot volume (or count).
