International Research Team Discovers that it Takes some Heat to form Ice on Graphene

International Research Team Discovers that it Takes some Heat to form Ice on Graphene Written by AZoNanoMay 27 2021 A new study from the University of Surrey, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge and Graz University of Technology (Austria), reveals that energy is needed for water to proceed through the first step of ice formation on graphene. Image Credit: University of Surrey In a paper published in Nature Communications, the research team details the complex physical processes at work to understand the chemistry of ice formation. The molecular-level perspective of this process...

It takes some heat to form ice!

E-Mail IMAGE: The study results of Anton Tamtögl et al lead to a completely new understanding of ice formation: Water molecules require additional energy before they freeze into ice. view more  Credit: © Lunghammer - TU Graz Water freezes and turns to ice when brought in contact with a cold surface - a well-known fact. However, the exact process and its microscopic details remained elusive up to know. Anton Tamtögl from the Institute of Experimental Physics at TU Graz explains: "The first step in ice formation is called 'nucleation' and happens in an incredibly short length of t...

Nanoscale tunneling microscopy goes contact-free - Vimarsana News

Nanoscale tunneling microscopy goes contact-free

Nanoscale tunneling microscopy goes contact-free MSU joins an international research team to create a new type of ‘nanoscopy’ to characterize interesting materials like never before A new microscopy technique lets researchers characterize materials with incredible precision while keeping its distance — at least from a nanoscopic perspective. Physicists from the University of Regensburg in Germany, the University of Manchester in England and Michigan State University developed the technique that enables observations at incredibly small sizes over ultrashort time scales. The invention, wh...

New atomically precise graphene nanoribbon heterojunction sensor developed - Vimarsana News

New atomically precise graphene nanoribbon heterojunction sensor developed

E-Mail An international research team led by the University of Cologne has succeeded for the first time in connecting several atomically precise nanoribbons made of graphene, a modification of carbon, to form complex structures. The scientists have synthesized and spectroscopically characterized nanoribbon heterojunctions. They then were able to integrate the heterojunctions into an electronic component. In this way, they have created a novel sensor that is highly sensitive to atoms and molecules. The results of their research have been published under the title 'Tunneling current modulatio...
