JEZERO CRATER, MARS - FEBRUARY 18: In this handout image provided by NASA, the first high-resolution, color image to be sent back by the Hazard Cameras (Hazcams) on the underside of NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover after its landing in the area known as Jezero crater on February 18, 2021 on the planet Mars. A key objective for Perseverance s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet s geology and past climate, paving the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith. Is Biomimicry a solution to world's environment problems?

The
COVID-19 pandemic has shown what havoc unchecked and indiscriminate environmental degradation can result in. Added to that is the
rising temperatures due to the
damaging amounts of carbon released in the atmosphere.
The world needs an urgent commitment to stop this devastation and look for
innovative sustainable solutions.
Biomimicry is a
nature-inspired solution to the problems faced by our planet. It imitates nature to find innovative designs to foster sustainability. We can use biomimicry to not only learn from nature’s wisdom but also heal ourselves and this planet in the process.
The whole purpose is to design and invent things that become a force for restoring air, water, and soil instead of degrading it. Biomimicry encourages conservation for ecosystems and its inhabitants because they hold the wisdom we need. The idea is to look at the biological blueprints left to us by nature’s creatures. ....

Biomimicry could lead to cities that "deliver net benefits" in the fight against climate change

Biomimicry could lead to cities that deliver net benefits in the fight against climate change
Cities could help stop climate change by imitating natural processes that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, according to architect Michael Pawlyn.
Buildings could be constructed from materials containing atmospheric carbon that can be recycled at the end of their lifetime, Pawlyn said.
New types of carbon-rich concrete and bioplastics could lock up large amounts of the element, he suggested.
We need to find ways of using materials that take carbon out of the atmosphere, he told Dezeen. Can we learn from biology to design a built environment that has a net positive impact?” ....

Live panel discussion on architecture, nature and technology

Mamou-Mani, Inglessis and Pawlyn discussed how technology can enable architects to create buildings that bring their inhabitants closer to nature, as well as how experimental projects can drive change in the wider design industry, and how the new accessibility of powerful design software is impacting architecture and sustainability.
Architect Arthur Mamou-Mani, who is collaborating with Dassault Systèmes, appeared on the panel
French architect Mamou-Mani is the founder of his eponymous London-based architecture practice, known for experiments with alternative materials and methods of construction.
The project explores how architects can use recyclable materials and emergent technologies like 3D-printing to create architectural projects that contribute to a circular economy and minimise their impact on the environment. ....
