Morrisons has become the first British supermarket with its own trawler after it purchased a Cornish seafood firm - while rivals have been stripping out their fresh fish counters. Falfish in Cornwall has been supplying the Bradford-based supermarket for 16 years, but a takeover means it will now supply 80% of Morrisons fish and shellfish. The wholesale company also owns a 30ft trawler, called the Jacqui A, which is now also owned by the retailer. Morrisons buys major Cornish fish supplier Falfish

Supermarket giant Morrisons has bought Cornish seafood supplier Falfish for an undisclosed sum 17 years after the pair first went into partnership together. The Yorkshire-based grocer said the deal would mean 80 per cent of their fish and shellfish will derive from operations it controls and make it the first British supermarket to possess a fishing trawler. Falfish is a family-owned business based in Redruth, though it also has a site in Falmouth, which employs around 140 staff and processes dozens of fish species, including Dover Sole, Red Mullet and European Lobster.
