More Indian scribes succumb to Covid-19, global tally reaching 1000

GENEVA/GUWAHATI: India continues to lose journalists in the Covid-19 pandemic even though the country has launched a massive vaccination program covering over 75 million Indians till date. On the other hand, global tally of casualties among media persons is reaching 1000. According to the Switzerland based media watchdog and rights body Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), at least 997 journalists succumbed to Covid-19 complications in 73 countries till the first week of April 2021.
Brazil (140 dead) and Peru (137) continue to top of the list of most affected countries followed by Mexico (93), India (60), Italy (51), USA (46), Bangladesh (46), Ecuador (45), Colombia (39), United Kingdom (28), Dominican Republic (27), Pakistan (25), Turkey (22), Panama (16), Russia (15), Spain (15), Bolivia (14), Ukraine (14), etc, stated PEC (www.pressemblem.ch/).

Veteran journalist Fatima R. Zakaria, the former Editor of the Sunday Times, Mumbai, and mother of renowned global media personality Fareed R. Zakaria, passed away here on Tuesday due to Covid at a private hospital, a close family friend said. Fatima R. Zakaria was the widow of former Maharashtra Minister and Islamic scholar Dr. Rafiq Zakaria, and had been admitted to a local hospital since the past few days, Aurangabad AIMIM MP Syed Imtiaz Jaleel told IANS.
She is survived by four children - Tasneem Zakaria-Mehta, an art historian, Manzoor Zakaria, Arshad Zakaria who is with a US-based global hedge fund and Fareed Zakaria, the US-based former Editor of Newsweek magazine and ex-Editor at large with Time magazine, and currently hosting the 'Fareed Zakaria GPS' show on CNN.

Aurangabad : , April 6 (IANS) Veteran journalist Fatima R. Zakaria, the former editor of the Sunday Times, Mumbai, and mother of global media personality Fareed R. Zakaria, passed away at a private hospital here on Tuesday due to Covid-19, a close family friend said.
Wife of former Maharashtra minister and Islamic scholar late Rafique Zakaria, Fatima Zakaria had been admitted to a local hospital for the past few days, Aurangabad AIMIM MP Syed Imtiaz Jaleel told IANS.

Fatima Zakaria is wife of
Dr Rafique Zakaria, former Maharashtra minister and a prominent Islamic scholar. Their son Fareed R. Zakaria is a global media personality.
